Jets to release Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Jets has come to an end.

On Thursday, the team announced that they will move on from Rodgers.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets will face $49 million in dead money when they eventually release him; they can take the full hit this year or, more likely, designate him as a post-June 1 cut.

“Last week, we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” said Head Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey in a press release. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”

The 20-year veteran was acquired via trade from the Green Bay Packers in April 2023. He tore his Achilles in the first series of his first game with the team in 2023.

Rodgers, 41, started all 17 games for New York in 2024, and statistically, he wasn’t that bad. He had 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. As a Jet, Rodgers became the fifth quarterback all-time to throw for 500 touchdowns, joining Tom Brady (649), Drew Brees (571), Peyton Manning (539), and Brett Favre (508).

However, the Jets(5-12) struggled last season and missed the playoffs for the 14th straight season.

Rodgers’ time with the Jets was a failure. When they acquired him, they had hopes of winning a Super Bowl, but unfortunately, it never happened. It should be interesting to see if Rodgers will continue to play or retire. He’s not completely washed, and in the right situation, he could have success, so his decision will be interesting.

Regarding the Jets, this is the right choice; it’s time to start fresh. They could get a quarterback with the seventh pick in this year’s draft or find a free agent, but we’ll wait and see.
