On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
With the win, the Eagles capture their second Super Bowl in franchise history.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate Philly’s ‘Big 3’ and their outstanding performances on Sunday:
-Eagles LB Josh Sweat picked a great day to have the best game of his career. Sweat, who will be a free agent, had six tackles, acareer-high 2.5 sacks, and two tackles for loss. In addition, he forced Mahomes into throwing an interception late in the second quarter. Sweat was a monster, and he made Patrick Mahomes’ life miserable on Sunday night.
-DB Cooper DeJean, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday on Sunday, had one of the biggest plays of the game when he picked off Mahomes in the second quarter and returned his first career interception 38 yards for a touchdown; the Eagles led 17-0 at that time and were in complete control.
-Super Bowl 59 MVP Jalen Hurts had his second straight strong game in this postseason. Hurts was 17/22 for 221 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. In addition, he ran for 72 yards(the most by a quarterback in Super Bowl history) and added another touchdown on the ground. He became the first player to lead his team in rushing and passing yards in two Super Bowls and the first player to win against the opposing quarterback he had lost to in a previous Super Bowl.
Honorable Mention:
-DE Milton Williams, who also will be a free agent, had a strong game. He sacked Mahomes two times and had a forced fumble and recovery. Like Sweat, he made Mahomes miserable. The Eagles sacked Mahomes six times, the most he’s been sacked in a game in his career.
-Zack Baun had his second interception of the postseason. That interception led to Hurts’ touchdown pass to A.J. Brown, which put the Eagles up 24-0 at halftime.
DC Vic Fangio devised a great game plan on Sunday. His defense shut out the Chiefs for almost three quarters, forced three turnovers, and made Kansas City have five three-and-outs. The Eagles wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl without Fangio’s hiring.
End of the Day:
The Eagles are world champions! After four weeks, head coach Nick Sirianni was doubted, but he went into the lab, and Philadelphia became a better team. After four weeks, Hurts was doubted, but after the bye week, he stopped turning the ball over and did everything the team needed to win. After four weeks, the defense was not very good, but after the bye week, Fangio got things right, and they took off. After four weeks, the offense was struggling, but they decided to be a run-heavy team led by Saquon Barkley, and he made history!
Eagles president of football operations Howie Roseman drafted well and found the right free agents, and he fixed everything that was not right in 2023; that’s why they are world champions!
What a season to remember. Some say the Eagles are the greatest team in the history of Philadelphia sports. I’m not sure about that, but they are probably the greatest team in franchise history.
What’s Next:
What’s next is a parade down Broad Street, which is scheduled for Friday.
One More Thing…
The Eagles were the best team in football from top to bottom, and it showed!
