Brittney Griner is excited to join the Dream

The Atlanta Dream have signed Brittney Griner, the team announced Saturday.

Griner was the No. 1 overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft and has spent the last 11 seasons in Phoenix, winning two championships.

Last season, the ten-time All-Star averaged 17.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per contest.

The 34-year-old is looking forward to joining the Dream and hopes to bring a championship to Atlanta.

“Atlanta felt like home the moment I started thinking about this next chapter,” Griner said in a press release. “What led me here was the team, the players, and most importantly, my family. I’m excited to be part of this city, to connect with the community, and help elevate this team into championship contention.”

According to Dream head coach Karl Smesko, Griner’s leadership skills will make the team better.

“Brittney is a Hall of Fame player who brings unmatched skill, productivity, and an incredible level of unselfishness to the court,” said Head Coach Karl Smesko. “Her leadership and selflessness will not only elevate our team but also enhance the chemistry and culture that we are cultivating.”

The ten-time All-Star bolsters the Dream’s roster by joining a core that also includes fellow Olympians Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, two-time WNBA champion Jordin Canada, and three-time All-Star Brionna Jones.

Last season, the Dream, who battled injuries, lost to the Liberty in the first round of the playoffs.

This addition should help Atlanta be a factor next season.
