Late in the fourth quarter on Sunday, with the Eagles leading the Rams 28-22, Los Angeles was driving and was deep in Eagles territory. It appeared the Rams were going to score a touchdown and take the lead.
At that point, the Eagles needed someone to make a play, and they found someone to do it.
Pro Bowl DT Jalen Carter was the man to get the job done. On third-and-2, Carter would bust through the line and sack QB Matthew Stafford, and on the next play, he pressured Stafford, and his throw was off the mark, and the Eagles held on and moved on to the NFC Championship Game, where they will face the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field next Sunday.
Carter finished the game with two sacks and a big forced fumble that Isaiah Rodgers returned deep in Rams territory.
We all see how athletic and strong Carter is, but according to Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, Carter also has a high football IQ.
“His football IQ and instincts are very high,” Sirianni said Monday. “I think you see he has a knack for being able to get the ball out – he’s done that a couple times this year – and hitting the right spot of the football when he’s getting the ball out.
“He has an ability to field double teams and be able to beat double teams, as you saw yesterday. His football IQ is very, very high. It takes more than talent to be a really good player in this league. It just does, right? Talent is a starting point. You need to have talent to be a great player, but there are other things that go along with it.
“And Football IQ and football instincts are high, high up on that list. He has those. Doing the right things off the field, making sure your body is in shape and you weigh the right [amount], like I talked about yesterday, he’s done that to elevate his play.
“And just loving football, which he obviously loves football because he works at it so hard. The talent, the football IQ, the love for football, the toughness that he has, being in great shape are all the reasons why you’re continuing to see him raise his level of play.”
The Eagles needed everything Carter brought to the table against the Rams, and they will continue to need him to play at this level when they battle Jayden Daniels and the Commanders.
