Eagles’ Sirianni: ‘He’s had a great first five weeks’

The Philadelphia Eagles moved to 5-0 after defeating the Rams 23-14 on Sunday; Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had season-highs of 303 passing yards and 72 yards rushing as he won a team-record 11 consecutive road starts since 2021. Hurts’ 11-game road winning streak is tied for the third-longest by an NFL QB since the 1970 merger.

Philadelphia has won 22 of its last 23 regular-season games started by Hurts.

Sunday’s win was also about the defense, especially in the second half. Philly’s defense shut the Rams out in the second half and held Los Angeles to 81 yards. In total, the Rams had only 249 total yards.

Rookie Jalen Carter was big-time. He recorded 2.0 sacks, making him the first Eagles rookie with 2.0-plus sacks in a game since 2017.

Carter leads the team with 3.5 sacks this season. Also, he is the third Eagle to produce 3.5-plus sacks in their first five career games. Furthermore, he leads all defensive tackles in pressures and hurries.

Like everyone else, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is impressed by the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft.

“First of all, phenomenal player who works really hard to continue to get better, and that’s been a phenomenal player through the first five weeks, right, and so he’s just got to keep doing it,” Sirianni said. “We saw that he was a phenomenal player in college, right? He’s had a great first five weeks. We have high hopes for him.

“He has to keep proving it over and over and over again. Because if you want to be considered in the top part of this league as a football player, it’s about consistency, and it’s about doing it year-in and year-out. So, he’s had a good start. He has to continue to put the work in. We know he has the talent.

“We know he’s a phenomenal talent based off of what you’ve seen so far, what we’ve seen in practice, what we saw in college, and now it’s his job just to continue to grow…

“We won’t put him in Canton yet. He’s got to just keep going each and every day and getting better, and it’s about consistency. He’s got the ability to do it. He’s just got to be consistent with it, and that’s by working hard and growing each day.”

Carter is a monster, and you can see why he easily could have been a top-5 pick in the draft. At this point, Carter appears he could be a dominant player for years to come, which is good new for the Eagles.
