Vikings add Daniel Jones to active roster

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings made a significant move, announcing the signing of Daniel Jones to their active roster from its practice squad.

In a related move, Minnesota waived QB Brett Rypien.

Jones, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, signed to the Vikings practice squad  in November after being released by the Giants. The 27-year-old had requested to be released by New York after he lost his starting job.

In 2024, Jones started 10 games for the Giants, including against the Vikings, going 216-of-341 (63.3%) for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, adding 265 yards and two touchdowns on 67 rushing attempts.

After leading New York to the Divisional Round of the 2022 Playoffs, which included a win over the Vikings, Jones signed a four-year, $160 million deal with the Giants.

As of now, the quarterback depth chart for the Vikings remains a mystery. With Nick Mullens currently serving as Sam Darnold’s backup, the question of where Daniel Jones will fit in adds an element of intrigue.

According to CBS Sports, Jones is still set to hit free agency this offseason. However, the Vikings have added him to their roster, potentially securing a compensatory draft pick if he decides to sign with another team.

Minnesota will travel to Los Angeles on Monday night in the wild card round of the playoffs.
