On Wednesday night, the Philadelphia 76ers(3-14) lost their second straight after falling to the Houston Rockets(14-6) 122-115 in OT at Wells Fargo Center.
The 76ers, without Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Caleb Martin, have dropped six of their last seven games.
Tyrese Maxey led the way for the 76ers with 39 points, a season-high 10 assists, and a career-high five steals.
After getting blown out by the Clippers on Sunday, Philadelphia battled and played hard throughout against a very good Houston Rockets team. Despite the loss, Maxey was satisfied with the team’s effort.
“I talked about it for the last two days,” Maxey said Wednesday about the team’s effort . “We showed it against Brooklyn, then we laid down and let the Clippers steamroll us. I said before the game, ‘no matter what the circumstance is, no matter what the score is, no matter what the situation is, we’re going to play until zero is on the clock’. That’s where we have to start at. If we’re going to turn this thing around, we have to start there. I think everybody did that tonight. One through eight, everybody played extremely hard. Ricky [Council IV] came in and was amazing. He was extremely confident, made threes, made plays on defense. KJ [Martin] came in and was really good and then everybody else who played was amazing. It sucks to lose, I absolutely hate losing, but that’s a step in the right direction.
Philadelphia did play hard on Wednesday, but they are past the point of moral victories. They have to find ways.
It’s still early, but the 76ers have to start stringing some wins together. In order to match their win total from last season, Philadelphia will have to go 44-21 the rest of the way. Last season, they had to win a game in the Play-In Tournament to make the playoffs.
Going 44-21 the rest of the way is not impossible if everybody is healthy, but it is definitely not easy, especially if Embiid has some restrictions.
On Saturday night, the 76ers get back at it on the road against the Pistons.
