Mavs look deeper, better in 2024-25

Last season, before the trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks(50-32) acquired P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, and after that trade, the Mavericks became one of the better teams in the NBA. Dallas was 21-9 in the regular season following the trade and went from the eighth to the fifth seed in the West; ultimately, they rode the wave to the NBA Finals before losing to the world-champion Celtics.

It was a season of surprises for the Mavericks, who defied expectations and made it to the Finals. This unexpected journey has set a new tone for the upcoming season, and the team is now better prepared to handle the heightened expectations.

Of course, they have their one-two punch of All-Stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. People had questions about this duo, but they answered all those questions. Washington and Gafford brought defensive energy that catapulted the team. They were instrumental in securing rebounds, blocking shots, and disrupting the opponents’ offense. Those two did all the dirty work, allowing the stars to shine.

In the offseason, Dallas added five-time All-Star Klay Thompson. The 34-year-old might not be what he used to be, but he should be able to get many open looks playing alongside of Doncic and Irving.

The Mavs should be deeper this season. Second-year center Dereck Lively looks like he has the goods. Jaden Hardy is an ascending player. Nahj Marshall is a solid bench piece and, of course, the always dependable Maxi Kleber. Quentin Grimes and Spencer Dinwiddie both could help as well.

Under the leadership of Nico Harrison and Jason Kidd, the Mavericks have built an outstanding roster. Their strategic planning and player development have significantly improved the team, instilling a sense of confidence in the fans.

On paper, the Mavs look better than they did a year ago, and the future looks promising.Prediction: 52-30, lose in conference finals.
