Giants’ Jones on benching: ‘I was frustrated, but not my decision’

In the first quarter, the New York Giants defense held the Eagles(4-2) scoreless and kept the Giants in the game for as long as it could.

However, they got no help from Daniel Jones and the offense; they had only 119 total yards and did not reach the end zone as they fell to the Eagles 28-3 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The Giants offensive line allowed 8.0 sacks; Jones, who has not thrown a touchdown pass at MetLife Stadium this season, threw for only 99 yards on Sunday, and he was pulled in the fourth quarter and replaced by backup quarterback Drew Lock.

After the loss, Daboll, who said Jones would continue to be the team’s starting quarterback, said he was trying to spark the team, so he went to Lock.

Certainly a tough game,” he said. “Got outcoached, got outplayed. Made a change in the fourth quarter when it was 28-3, we had 100 yards, just to create a spark. Daniel (Jones) will be the quarterback going forward. But, obviously, we didn’t do enough offensively. Hardly had any yards, no points. Defensively, I thought we battled hard. We had two big runs in the first half and then that fourth down (pass) to (Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver) A.J. (Brown). Then, the game kind of got away from us. They ran the ball. Just not a good day, all the way around. No excuses. We got to play better and coach better.”

Daboll, whose Giants are 0-4 at MetLife Stadium this year, made it clear that the issues on offense were not all on Jones.

“I thought we had some chances there to make some plays,” Daboll explained. “We just didn’t make them. I wasn’t going to take him (quarterback Daniel Jones) out then. All the way around, not just the quarterback, the coaching, everything, just wasn’t good enough.”

Jones was frustrated by Daboll’s decision to remove him from the game.

“Yeah, it was frustrating,” he said. “You want to be out there playing with your teammates and fighting to score points and move the ball. So, I was frustrated, but not my decision. Yeah, frustrating for sure; I want to be out there playing.”

This is not all on Jones. He wasn’t protected very well, and the Giants defense did allow 269 yards on the ground, but New York paid Jones like a franchise quarterback, and the teams expect him to be better.

Things get even in worse in New York(2-5) as they travel to Pittsburgh to battle the Steelers next Monday night, and things will only get worse if the offense can’t score points.
