Eagles’ Sirianni talks release of Devin White

On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles released LB Devin White. The 26-year-old battled an ankle injury that caused him to miss the season opener; he was a healthy scratch in Weeks 2 and 3, and White missed Week 4 due to personal reasons.

He never played a down for the Eagles after signing a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the team in March.

The Eagles(2-2) returned to work on Wednesday after the bye week as they prepare to host the Cleveland Browns(1-4) on Sunday. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who had high praise for White, discussed the decision to move on from the former Pro Bowler.

“Ever since [LB] Devin [White] got here, I just thought he was a really great pro,” Sirianni said. “He handled everything with class. I know that was a hard situation for him to be in, a guy that has started a lot of games in this league and been successful in this league.

“And I can’t say enough good things about Devin, the person, and how he handled a disappointing situation for him. I think it just gives you a perspective of what we feel about the rest of that room. And the guys we have in that room, and how they’ve been executing, and how they’ve been playing. Look forward to continuing to grow with those guys that we have.”

Linebackers Nakobe Dean and Zack Baun outplayed White, which basically made him expendable. In addition, White does not play special teams, so there really was not a role for him, which

Sirianni explained why the team could not find a role for the six-year veteran.

“It goes back to [LB] Nakobe [Dean] and [LB] Zack [Baun] getting that spot, winning that spot,” he said. “And, like I said, that’s not an easy situation. I can’t say enough good things about [LB] Devin [White] and how he handled a really hard situation.

“Sometimes, guys have roles on special teams, etc, and just in this particular case, this is where we were and just how it played out.”

The Eagles obviously believe White just does not have a role with this team, which is why they decided to go in a different direction.
