The Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has signed a multi-year contract extension, the team announced on Friday.

According to Shams Charania, it’s a three-year, $193 million maximum extension, with a player option in 2028-2029. With the extension, the seven-time All-Star has five years and $301 million on his contract.

“I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career,” Embiid said in a statement. “I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia,” Embiid said. “Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything, and I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me. I want to thank Josh, David, and the entire organization. Philadelphia is home, and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”

Last season, the 30-year-old averaged 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in 2023-24, joining Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain as the only two players in NBA history to average at least 34.0 points, 11.0 boards, and 5.0 assists over any 39-game span.

“Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game,”  Managing Partner Josh Harris said. “We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come,”  “Joel is a great family man, leader, and person. He is an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely – if ever – seen. He is integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA Championship, and we are honored that he continues to choose this organization as his NBA home.

Originally selected by the 76ers with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, Embiid’s 2016-17 All-Rookie Team honor served as an appropriate beginning to a decorated career that includes a gold medal representing Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 2022-23, five All-NBA Team honors, seven consecutive All-Star selections from 2017-24, three All-Defensive Team nods, and back-to-back seasons as the NBA’s scoring champion (2021-23).

In 433 games (all starts) with the franchise, Embiid has averaged 27.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 blocked shots across 31.9 minutes per contest. He ranks first in franchise history in scoring average (27.9 points/game), fifth in blocked shots (720), tied for sixth in triple-doubles (seven), and seventh in total points scored (12,071). The eight-year veteran also ranks third on the franchise ledger with eight 50-point games, including his record-setting 70-point contest against San Antonio on Jan. 22, 2024.

Embiid is an elite center, but the one thing he has struggled with his health. With the addition of Paul George and the growth of Tyrese Maxey, Embiid has maybe his best chance to win an NBA title; however, for everything to work out go right, he must stay healthy.
