The Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) lost to the Atlanta Falcons (1-1) in heartbreaking fashion 22-21 at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate Philly’s ‘Big 3’ and their outstanding performances against the Falcons.
-Jalen Hurts completed 23/30 for 183 yards, TD, INT, and an 88.6 rating, while rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, combining for 268 yards and two touchdowns He did his job against the Falcons, but unfortunately, he can’t catch his passes.
-Saquon Barkley led the Eagles with 116 scrimmage yards, including a team-best 95 rushing yards on 22 attempts and 21 yards on four receptions, in addition to his 2-point conversion (rush). He did his job for most of the game, but unfortunately, not the whole game.
-Nobody
Honorable mention:
-Devonta Smith had seven receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.
End of the Day:
This was a bad loss for many reasons.
First, the Eagles are a better football team than the Falcons.
Next, the Eagles pretty much had the game won. Whether you hate or love the third and three call late in the game deep in Falcons’ territory with Atlanta having no timeouts, the play worked. All Barkley had to do was catch a very catchable ball, and the game was over.
Instead, he dropped it, and Kirk Cousins drove the Falcons 70 yards with no timeouts and threw the game-winning touchdown to Drake London. Hurts and the Eagles had a chance at the end, but he threw a terrible interception.
Finally, these are the games you will look back on at season’s end and say that cost us homefield advantage, or the division.
Also, going forward, the Eagles defense has to stop the run. Against the Packers, they allowed 163 yards and on Monday, the Falcons rushed for 152 yards. It’s hard to win in the NFL if you can’t stop the run, and right now, Philadelphia can’t stop the run. Furthermore, they can’t sack the quarterback. The Eagles only sacked Cousins one time, and they could not get consistent pressure on him. He was a stationary target, and he was there to be sacked.
Next week’s game against the Saints won’t be easy, and without A.J. Brown (hamstring), who could be Philly’s best player, things could go from bad to worse.
Next up:
The Eagles travel to New Orleans to face the undefeated Saints(2-0) next Sunday.
