It took some time for it to happen, but in the end, the Cleveland Cavaliers have finally re-signed guard/forward Isaac Okoro to a multi-year contract, the team announced on Tuesday.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Okoro, a restricted free agent, signed a three-year, $38 million deal.
Last season, the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and a career-high-tying 1.9 assists in 27.3 minutes. Okoro shot a career-best 84-215 (.391) from the three-point line, marking his career-high for three-pointers made in a single season. During the month of February, Okoro shot 22-49 (.449) from beyond the arc, his best three-point shooting stretch of the season.
Okoro, who excels on defense, recorded one steal in a career-high 10 straight games from Feb. 25 to March 11 and had seven straight games with at least one steal and one block from Feb. 27 to March 10, the longest such streak by Cavalier since LeBron James in 2010.
In four seasons in Cleveland, the 23-year-old has appeared in 279 games (216 starts) and has a career average of 8.5 points on .467 shooting from the field, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 27.6 minutes. He has also appeared in 17 playoff games.
Okoro is a solid role player who can defend a team’s best wing scorer. He’s athletic and finishes at the rim. Plus, he’s only 23, so he could still improve his game.
