Giants’ Daboll to call plays in 2024

After two years of allowing offensive coordinator/assistant head coach Mike Kafka to call plays, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has made a significant decision for the 2024 NFL season. He has officially taken over the play-calling responsibilities, a move that could potentially reshape the team’s performance.

“Yeah, I’m doing it,” Daboll confirmed on Tuesday.

Daboll has had much success as a play-caller in his career, including his last job as an offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills before coming to the Giants, but last season, the Giants struggled offensively.

Some head coaches have given up play-calling duties, while most offensive-minded head coaches tend to call plays, which manes more responsibility, but Daboll says it comes with the territory.

‘I’m the head coach, so I’m responsible for everything, whether it’s the defense, the special teams, the offense,” he said.

With Daboll calling the plays, maybe things will be better with New York offensively, but the quarterback has to be better. This is a pivotal year for Daniel Jones, who led the Giants to the playoffs in 2022 and signed a four-year, $160 million contract with the team in 2023. However, he’s coming off a significant knee injury(torn ACL), and some believe he’s not a franchise quarterback, but for now, New York must try to bring the best out of him.

Another area that demands immediate attention is the offensive line, which must show significant improvement to bolster the team’s offensive capabilities. New York allowed a league-high 85 sacks in 2023, so this unit has to be better.

In addition, they have to get more from their skill positions. Last season, Darius Slayton was the team’s leading wide receiver with only 770 yards and four touchdowns. New York’s receivers are young and hopefully rookie Malik Nabers, third-year receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, and second-year wideout Jalin Hyatt can produce.

Furthermore, they will have to replace Saquon Barkley’s production, but again, maybe Daboll can get the offense going in 2024.
