Team USA Women capture Olympic gold for eighth consecutive time

Team USA Women captured a gold medal for the eighth consecutive time after defeating the host country, France 67-66 on Sunday, but it wasn’t easy.

Team USA Women also won their 61st straight game in Olympic play, and for the first time in Olympic play, both gold medal games, men and women, featured the same matchup as the USA Men’s team defeated France on Saturday. 

Team USA Women have been dominant in Olympic play. During their 61-game winning streak, only three games, including Sunday’s win, have ended in single-digit victories. 

The game saw six lead changes and 11 knotted scores. The Americans took a two-point lead, 45-43, into the fourth. 

After two Kahleah Copper free throws put Team USA up 67-64 with 3.8 seconds to go, France’s Gabby Williams, who had a team-high 19 points, made a shot at the buzzer, but her foot was on the line, and Team USA escaped with the win.

A’ja Wilson, who was named women’s basketball tournament MVP, put up game highs of 21 points, 13 boards, and four blocked shots, In addition, Diana Taurasi wins her Olympic record sixth gold medal.

Wilson averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, ranking 3rd, 2nd, and 1st among all competitors, respectively. Wilson also finished third in the field for field goal percentage.
