Mavs bring back Spencer Dinwiddie

The Dallas Mavericks announced on Saturday that they have signed free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie.

Dinwiddie appeared in 76 games last season (48 for the Brooklyn Nets, 28 for the Los Angeles Lakers), starting 52 of them. With the Nets, he averaged 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.0 assists before being traded to the Toronto Raptors and later waived on Feb. 4. After signing with the Lakers for the remainder of the 2023-24 season, Dinwiddie averaged 6.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.

“We welcome having Spencer back with us in Dallas,” stated Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison in a press release. “Spencer is an experienced teammate, who understands what we are trying to accomplish. His energy, versatility, and playmaking from the guard position adds invaluable depth to our roster and leaves us well positioned going into next season.”

The 31-year-old guard returns to the Mavericks after playing in Dallas for portions of the 2021-22 and 22-23 seasons, averaging 17.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 32.3 minutes through 76 games (60 starts). Dinwiddie, acquired by Dallas at the 2021-22 trade deadline on Feb. 10, tallied 36 points in his first start with the team (vs. SAC, 3/5/22).

During this time, Dinwiddie was one of only 12 players in Mavericks history to hit a game-winning buzzer-beater after nailing the game-winning 3-pointer at Brooklyn (3/16/22), helping Dallas to a 2022 Western Conference Finals appearance, averaging 14.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists through 18 postseason games.

In 542 career NBA games (315 starts) across 10-plus seasons with the Lakers (2023-24), Brooklyn (2022-24, 2016-21), Dallas (2022-23), Washington (2021-22) and Detroit (2014-16), Dinwiddie averaged 13.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists in 27.8 minutes.

This a decent signing for the Mavs; Dinwiddie could be the backup to Luka Doncic next season.
