76ers’ Morey: ‘Kyle(Lowry) is a floor general, the ultimate competitor, and a proven winner’

Kyle Lowry is staying home.

On Friday, the 76ers announced that they had re-signed the 18-year veteran.

According to reports, it’s a one-year deal.

“Kyle is a floor general, the ultimate competitor, and a proven winner who has experienced success at the highest level,” said 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey. “His return is vital to our quest toward bringing a championship back to the City of Philadelphia,”

After signing with the 76ers on Feb. 13, Lowry averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 40.4-percent from beyond the arc in 23 games (20 starts). His 106 assists ranked second on the team during that span (Maxey, 125). He appeared in each of the 76ers’ six first-round playoff games against New York, tallying 18 points in Game 1.

Lowry, 38, scored in double figures on 20 occasions over 60 games played (55 starts) between Miami and Philadelphia last season, including three 20-point performances.

In 18 NBA seasons, which include six consecutive All-Star selections from 2015-20 and a Third Team All-NBA selection in 2015-16, Lowry has produced 14.3 points (36.8% 3FG), 4.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 1.3 steals in 31.7 minutes. He’s appeared in 1,138 games (886 starts) with Memphis, Houston, Toronto, Miami, and Philadelphia. Lowry ranks in the top 10 among active players in assists (fifth, 7,003), three-pointers (seventh, 2,176), steals (eighth, 1,466), and triple-doubles (10th, 21).

A native of North Philadelphia, Lowry’s illustrious career includes an Olympic gold medal in 2016 and an NBA championship 2019. During that title run with Toronto, which was guided by current 76ers Head Coach Nick Nurse, Lowry averaged 15.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 37.5 minutes per game in 24 postseason contests.

Before being selected by Memphis with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft, Lowry played collegiately at Villanova for two seasons (2004-06).

Lowry will probably be the team’s primary backup point guard, and he should provide veteran leadership for the 76ers next season.
