Wizards announce coaching staff, Vegas Summer League roster

On Wednesday, the Washington Wizards announced additions to head coach Brian Keefe’s coaching staff for the 2024-25 season.

David Vanterpool returns for his second season with Washington, while Adam Caporn, J.J. Outlaw, Brian Randle, T.J. Sorrentine, and Alexis Ajinça will each serve as assistant coaches on the new staff.

Meet the Wizards coaching staff:

Adam Caporn joins Keefe’s staff after spending the last three seasons with the Brooklyn Nets organization as an assistant coach (2022-24) and the head coach of the Long Island Nets (2021-22). Prior to joining Brooklyn, the Baldivis, Australia native spent the previous seven seasons as head coach of Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence, and has served over 10 years with Australia Basketball as an assistant coach with the National Team (2017-present), and as head coach of the U19 National Team (2014-16). Caporn played two collegiate seasons with Saint Mary’s and six seasons professionally in Australia and New Zealand before beginning his coaching career in Australia.

J.J. Outlaw, a Columbia, Md. native, served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers each of the last five seasons. Prior to Cleveland, he spent two seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and five seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers working in scouting, player development, and as an assistant coach in his stops. Outlaw played football at Villanova University and was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection before earning a roster spot with the Philadelphia Eagles. Outlaw began his basketball coaching career by serving as the Director of Basketball Operations for Marist University in 2009.

Brian Randle comes to Washington after spending last season as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons and holds five additional NBA seasons of coaching experience with the Phoenix Suns (2020-23) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2018-19). The Peoria, Ill. native played 10 seasons professionally overseas, primarily in Israel with stops in Germany and Italy, and was named the Israeli League Defensive Player of the Year a league-record three times (2009, 2014, and 2015). Randle played collegiately at Illinois and was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a Big Ten All-Defensive Team selection in 2005-06.

T.J. Sorrentine spent the last 16 seasons on the Brown University coaching staff as an assistant coach; serving as the associate head coach since 2011. The Pawtucket, R.I. native played four seasons at the University of Vermont, famously hitting a three-point shot that sent the Catamounts to an upset over the four-seeded Syracuse Orangemen in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. A member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame and the University of Vermont Hall of Fame, Sorrentine played professionally for three seasons in Slovenia, Portugal, Italy, and the then-NBA D-League.

Alexis Ajinça joins the Wizards staff after spending last season as an assistant coach with the Capital City Go-Go. Ajinça played nine seasons in the NBA with the New Orleans Pelicans (2013-18), Toronto Raptors (2011), Dallas Mavericks (2010-11), and Charlotte Bobcats (2008-2010). The native of Saint-Etienne, France also played several years in his home country, beginning his professional career with Pau-Orthez (2006-07) and Hyères-Toulon (2007-08) before being drafted 20th overall by Charlotte in the 2008 NBA Draft. He returned to France playing for SIG Strasbourg (2011-2013) where he was named to the All-French League First Team (2013), All-French League Third Team (2012), and All-French League Defensive Team (2012).

Wizards announce Summer League roster

The Washington Wizards also announced their roster for NBA Summer League 2024 in Las Vegas, which will begin with a matchup with the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, July 12 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Washington’s three first round selections headline the roster, as Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George will play in a Wizards uniform for the first time. The rookies will be joined by Patrick Baldwin Jr., Jules Bernard, Jared Butler, Justin Champagnie, Johnny Davis, Eugene Omoruyi, and Tristan Vukcevic, all of whom appeared in a game for Washington last season.

Washington will be coached by Cody Toppert, who completed his first season as head coach of the Capital City Go-Go this past year.
