Klay Thompson is going to Dallas

Klay Thompson’s time with the Golden State Warriors has come to an end.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Thompson will join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal.

This is a multi-team sign-and-trade that’ll also send Josh Green to Charlotte.

According to Wojnarowski, Thompson had four-year offers for more money, but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs and the difference in state taxes.

However, according to Chris B. Haynes, Golden State is still working through the details with Dallas, and the deal is not close, so the teams still have some work to do.

The 34-year-old Thompson should fit pretty well in Dallas. His ability to spot up and catch-and-shoot will be very beneficial, playing off of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Thompson, who won four NBA titles with the Warriors, is a surefire Hall of Famer and gives the Mavericks, who lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals, more championship experience and another player who can put the ball in the basket.

The five-time All-Star, who tore his ACL in July 2019 and ruptured his Achilles tendon in September 2020, is not who he used to be on both ends of the court, but he can still help and is another piece to a championship puzzle. Plus, he might have something to prove, and sometimes, when players have something to prove, they do all they can to prove it.

It’s going to be interesting seeing Thompson in another uniform. For many years, Thompson and Steph Curry formed the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history. Along with Draymond Green, Golden State had a very successful trio.

Last season, in 77 games, Thompson averaged 17.9 points per contest on 39% shooting from deep.
