LeBron James will have an opportunity to play with his son!
The Los Angeles Lakers selected guard Bronny James with the 55th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft held Thursday in New York.
With the selection, LeBron and Bronny will be the first active father-son duo in NBA history to play together on the same team.
The 6-2 James averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 25 games (six starts) in his lone season at the University of Southern California in 2023-24.
Prior to his freshman campaign at USC, the 19-year-old attended Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles, where he played four seasons for the Trailblazers. Following his senior season, James was named a McDonald’s All-American.
Lakers Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Rob Pelinka likes Bronny’s work ethic and does not take any shortcuts.
“Bronny is first and foremost a person of high character,” Pelinka said in a press release. “And secondly, he’s a young man who works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental core at the Lakers. He had a great draft workout with us where he displayed those qualities.”
“In terms of his work ethic, we’ve all seen that lived out, too. He’s not a person who has ever taken shortcuts or expected or been entitled about basketball opportunities.”
Last July, Bronny collapsed during USC practice after he suffered cardiac arrest, which was due to a congenital heart defect, but he was able to overcome and get back on the court.
According to ESPN’s Bob Myers, Bonny’s agent, Rich Paul, is calling teams, don’t take Bronny James … if you take him, he’s going to Australia.”
Hate or love LeBron, this is a great story. You could argue that Bronny doesn’t deserve this opportunity, but that’s a debate for another day. This is an amazing story, and it would be hard not to root for Bronny.
