Mavs’ Kidd: ‘Our ultimate goal is to win a championship’

The Dallas Mavericks concluded the 2023-24 regular season on a high note, securing an impressive 16-4 record in their final 20 games. This momentum carried them into the playoffs, where they triumphed over the Clippers six.

Recently, there have been rumors that Mavs head coach Jason Kidd could be linked to the Los Angeles Lakers, who fired their coach Darvin Ham, but that won’t happen after today.

As they prepare for their upcoming battle with the OKC Thunder in the second round of the playoffs, the Mavs announced on Monday that they have signed Kidd to a multi-year contract extension.

“I’m very thankful for (Mavericks Governor) Patrick (Dumont) and (Mavs GM) Niko(Harrison) and to be able to have a new deal going forward,” Kidd said after practice today. ” Yeah it means a lot the work that you know the coaching staff and the players are putting in you know means a lot, and hopefully they saw that, and you know through the through the good and through the stuff that we had to get better at… This is a a very talented team and so to be a part of it, I’m I’m very blessed.”

Led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, the Mavs have a lot of talent and a legitimate chance to make a long playoff run this season. Kidd is hoping Dallas can win a title in the next few seasons.

“Yeah, I think we’re trying to win a championship, and so you know we have an opportunity,” Kidd said. We’re playing a very talented team in Oklahoma City. But understanding that the foundation is being built, and you know, our ultimate goal is to win a championship, and hopefully, we can do that here in the next three years.”

Kidd is in his third season as head coach of the Mavericks, and the team has recorded 50-plus wins in two of his three seasons at the helm (52 in 2021-22 and 50 in 2023-24) and won the Southwest Division title this year. Additionally, during his tenure, Dallas won a playoff series in two of his first three seasons as the head coach, advancing to the Western Conference Finals in 2022.
