Steelers acquire Justin Fields from Bears

The Chicago Bears finally decided on Justin Fields on Saturday as they traded him to the Steelers in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick, which could become a fourth-round selection based on playing time.

Chicago, who has the number one pick in this year’s draft, is expected to select a quarterback with that pick, probably USC’s Caleb Williams.

Regarding the Steelers, they recently signed quarterback Russell Wilson and traded last year’s starter, Kenny Pickett, to the Eagles.

The 25-year-old Fields, who the Bears selected 11th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, started 13 games for Chicago last season. He threw for a career-high 2,562 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushed for 657 yards and four touchdowns.

Fields played in 40 games(38 starts) in three seasons with the Bears. He has completed 578 of 958 pass attempts (60.3%) for 6,674 yards and threw 40 touchdowns. Also, Fields rushed for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns.

At this point, 35-year-old Wilson is the starter for the Steelers next season, while Fields will likely be the backup. If Fields is the backup, this will allow him to step back and prepare to be a starter in Pittsburgh or elsewhere.

Let’s be honest: Fields probably did not get a fair shake in Chicago, but sometimes that’s the business of football. The Bears think the better option at quarterback is in the draft, which very well could be true.

This is a deal we’ll judge a few years from now to see who won.
