The Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets did a deal on Thursday that will not impact both teams this season. The Grizzlies traded center Steven Adams to the Houston Rockets for Victor Oladipo and three future second-round draft picks.
Due to injuries, both Adams(PCL) and Oladipo(patellar tendon) have not played this season.
Adams has been out since January 2023 but is expected to be ready next season, while Oladipo, who probably won’t return this season, got injured last May in the playoffs with the Heat.
The 30-year-old Adams started 117 of his 118 appearances during his two seasons with the Grizzlies and averaged 7.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 26.5 minutes. In 10 NBA seasons, Adams has averaged 9.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 blocks in 26.8 minutes for Oklahoma City, New Orleans, and Memphis since he was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Oladipo, who has been traded thrice since last July, has averaged 16.9 points per contest in 10 NBA seasons. The 31-year-old has played for the following teams: Orlando, Indiana, Houston, and Miami since he was selected with the second overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
Houston now gets another big they can use to back up their talented center, Alperen Sengun
According to ESPN, Memphis unloads $12.4 million in guaranteed salary off the Grizzlies’ payroll for 2024-25.
Memphis has battled injuries all year long, including a season-ending shoulder injury to their best player, Ja Morant, so at this point, they are looking to the 2024-25 season. Houston, who is 1/2 game behind the Jazz for the final spot in the Play-In Tournament, still has a chance to get into the postseason.
