Jets’ Saleh talks release of Dalvin Cook

On Wednesday, the New York Jets released running back Dalvin Cook, which will allow him to sign with a playoff contender.

The 28-year-old signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Jets in August, but the four-time Pro Bowler was not much of a factor due to the play of Breece Hall.

This season, Cook, who spent the first six years of his career with the Vikings after being drafted by the team in the second round in 2017, rushed for only 214 yards on 67 carries.

Jets coach Robert Saleh discussed Cook’s release.

“Just good business for everybody, I guess,” Saleh said on Wednesday. “Dalvin’s (Cook) been an unbelievable teammate since the day he walked in here. Obviously, it hasn’t gone the way any of us have wanted. He’s been an unbelievable teammate and an unbelievable mentor to the young guys. I know he’s been hurting, not physically, but just wanting to be out there to be able to help the team, but he’s put aside all his frustrations and showed up with a smile on his face, energy, and practice, and being attentive in meetings. He’s been an unbelievable teammate, and whatever opportunity he gets, I know he’s going to be great…

“Like we said from the beginning, as long as Breece (Hall) was healthy, Breece was going to get the bigger load. Obviously, in the middle of the year, we just had a significant lull, but Breece has been getting healthier and healthier, and he’s our bell call.”

Once the Jets signed Aaron Rodgers, New York was all in, and Cook was a part of them being all in. However, just like this whole season, things did not work out.

New York finishes the 2023 season on the road on Sunday against the New England Patriots.
