Kidd on Doncic: ‘He’s one of the best in the world’

The greatness of Luka Doncic was on full display on Christmas night in Phoenix, and he accomplished a lot on Monday night.

He scored his 10,000th career point in the first half(seventh fastest player to 10k points in NBA history), had 50 points, including eight threes, six rebounds, 15 assists, four steals, and three blocks, and most importantly, the Mavs(18-12) defeated the Suns (14-15) 128-114.

Doncic tied Rick Barry for the third-most points by a player on Christmas Day. In addition, he is the first player in NBA history to produce at least 50 points, six rebounds, 15 assists, four steals, and three blocks in the same game.

The four-time All-Star had a big game on the big stage, and according to Doncic, scoring 50 points and getting his 10,000th point mean much more because they won.

“When these kind of awards come with a win, it’s always more fun,” he said. “That was a tough road game, and we won. Outside of the 10k and the 50 points, we won the game, so I’m really happy.”

Mavs coach Jason Kidd believes you can’t take Doncic’s greatness for granted.

“One, congratulations to Luka getting the 10K, that’s pretty fast, that’s pretty cool,” Kidd said. “But also on Christmas, to be in the likes of Bernard King, Wilt(Chamberlain), Rick Berry to score 50 on Christmas; that’s pretty cool…

“He’s one of the best in the world; we can’t take him for granted.”

With no Kyrie Irving(heel) for the ninth straight game, the Mavs needed others to step up. Rookie Dereck Lively II had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Derrick Jones Jr. added 23 points.

Both players had this to say about Doncic’s performance.

“Amazing,” Jones said.

“Magic,” added Lively.

Doncic’s was amazing and magical, and again, most importantly, the Mavs got a big road win.

Dallas, who has won two straight after snapping a three-game losing streak on Saturday against San Antonio, returns home on Wednesday to face the Cavs.
