Coming into their game against the Saints on Sunday, Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants had won three straight and playing some decent football.
However, that all ended in New Orleans as the Giants fell to the Saints 24-6.
The loss means New York will finish below .500 for the sixth time in seven seasons, and while the Giants are still mathematically alive in the NFC playoff race, they are two games out of the final wild-card spot with three games to play, so it’s basically over.
DeVito, who left in the second quarter after taking a big hit but returned in the third, was sacked seven times and could not get the Giants in the end zone. This was the sixth game in which Giants quarterbacks were sacked at least seven times.
According to the undrafted rookie free agent, the Giants needed to play with more swagger.
“We just lacked execution on offense,” DeVito said. “We weren’t good on third downs. We have to be better. I don’t think we played with enough swagger. I put that on me because I’m like, I take that personally, as far as playing with energy, playing with juice. So I need to be better with that.
This was the fourth game this season in which the Giants did not score a touchdown and the fifth game in which they had no offensive touchdowns. The Giants had 193 total yards of offense, the fifth game this season in which they had fewer than 200.
Despite not leading the Giants to a touchdown, DeVito, who completed 20 of 34 passes – both career highs – for 177 yards, will get the start on Christmas in Philadelphia against the Eagles, according to Giants coach Brian Daboll.
“He believes in me,” DeVito said about Daboll. “I’m going to continue to try to earn his trust and all that each play that I’m on the field.”
A win over the Saints could have put the Giants in a better position to make the playoffs, but they just were not good enough.
At this point, barring injury, the Giants should let DeVito play the rest of the season, especially since they have no shot to make the playoffs.
