Giants’ Hodgins on Jones: ‘I think he put a lot of the league on notice last year’

Before the 2022 season, there were many more questions than answers when it came to New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, but many of those questions were answered after last season.

Jones started a career-high 16 games in 2022 (he sat out a meaningless Week 18 game); He led the Giants to their first postseason win since 2011 and their first playoff appearance since 2016.

Jones, 26, completed a Giants-record 67.2% of his passes and finished with a career-high 92.5 passer rating; in addition, he was also second on the team with 708 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, both records for a Giants quarterback.

In the offseason, the Giants awarded the fifth-year quarterback with a four-year, $160 million contract.

Giants wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who started his career with the Bills before joining the Giants last November, said Jones reminds him of Bills Pro Bowl quarterback Josh Allen.

“We definitely knew that he was a tall, strong quarterback,” Hodgins said on Monday. “We used to always talk about him and compare him to (Bills quarterback) Josh Allen. We definitely knew he had the physical traits and stuff, and coming here, I was able to see the mental side and the preparation and work ethic. He’s the full package, and I think he’s a great quarterback, so I’ll ride or die about him.

According to Hodgins, Jones got the league’s attention after his performance last season.

“I think he put a lot of the league on notice last year, so I think those conversations start to come up when you have good performances like he did,” Hodgins said. “A lot of people were probably talking bad, and then he has the season that he had last year, and now people are trying to debate if he’s good or not, if he’s top this or whatever. That’s going to come with performances like he’s had. I know he’s not worried about it (and) I know as a wideout room and as a team, we’re really not either. We’re focused on what we can do to win games every week.”

Last season, the Giants receivers and tight end could have been better. This season, they added tight end Darren Waller, wide receivers Parris Campbell and rookie Jalin Hyatt. Jones should have more talent around him, so he could have a better season in 2023.
