The third is the charm; Delaware wins G League title

The third time is the charm!

The Delaware Blue Coats(76ers G League affiliate) went on the road in Game 2 of the G League Finals to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 114-110 on Thursday night.

With the win, the Blue Coats capture their first G League title, sweep the Vipers and win the best-of-three series 2-0.

Philadelphia 76ers second-year guard Jaden Springer, who averaged 34 points per game in this series, was named G League Finals MVP.

Delaware has fallen short in the G League Finals the past two seasons, including getting swept by the Vipers last season. However, they got their revenge this time around.

Just like in Game 1, Delaware was led by their backcourt of Mac McClung and Springer. McClung led the Blue Coats with 30 points and eight assists, while Springer had 21 points and nine rebounds. In Game 1, the two combined for 78 points, and in Game 2, the two combined for 51 points.

As usual, Braxton Key did it all for the Blue Coats: he added 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.

Delaware led 60-57 at the break, but they broke the game open in the third, where they outscored the Vipers 30-17 in the quarter, and a three-point halftime lead turned into a 90-74 lead at the end of three.

Delaware had their largest lead of the 19 points early in the fourth.

However, in the fourth, Rio Grande Valley’s TyTy Washington Jr. scored 12 of his game-high 38 points. The Vipers got the lead down to 112-108, with an opportunity to cut it to two, but Louis King had the defensive play of the series when he had a chase-down block of Trevor Hudgins with 13.1 seconds left, and Delaware held on from there.

Delaware is building a G League dynasty of sorts. Three straight appearances to the G Finals, and now a championship. Credit to GM Prosper Karangwa for putting together a solid roster and head coach Coby Karl.
