Super Bowl LV will feature a quarterback matchup for the ages. On one side, you have the GOAT in Tom Brady, who has six Super Bowls victories and is looking for number seven, and on the other side, you have a guy who looks like he could be the GOAT at some point in Patrick Mahomes, who led Kansas City to a Super Bowl title last season.
Brady and Mahomes have a history in the postseason. In the 2018 season, the two battled in the AFC title game. Brady and the Patriots were able to get the best of Mahomes and the Chiefs in OT 37-31. Ultimately, Brady would win his sixth ring two weeks later in Super Bowl LIII. Overall, the two have spilt their four matchups.
The 25-year-old Mahomes has gotten even better since that time and is the best quarterback in football. There is no throw he can’t make, and he defies all rules and logic with some of the things he does on the field. According to Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians, Mahomes is a unique talent.
“He is unique. He is very unique,” Arians said. “There are no other quarterbacks that run out to the right and throw all of the way back across the field to the left. You teach them not to do that, but he’s great at it, so you let him do it. He’s an amazing player to be able to backpedal and throw the ball so accurately down the field. A great scrambler. There’s nothing about his game that isn’t better than most.”
The Buccaneers’ defense will have their hands full with Mahomes and this Chiefs’ offense. In their regular season matchup back in November, Mahomes threw for 452 yards and three touchdowns against Tampa Bay, and Kansas City led 17-0 in the first quarter and 20-7 at halftime. However, Tampa Bay’s defense allowed only seven points in the second half, but Kansas City would hold on and defeat Tampa Bay 27-24.
The Buccaneers’ defense has come up big in the playoffs. Tampa Bay has forced seven turnovers, which they’ve converted into 41 points, so while we will talk about Brady and Mahomes, it might come down to the Buccaneers’ defense.
Obviously, Tampa Bay does not get to the Super Bowl without the 43-year-old Brady, but to win it, they will need their defense to find a way to slow down the unique talents of Mahomes.
