Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is a rich man. Kansas City and Mahomes agreed to a contract extension, the team announced on Monday.
According to his agent Leigh Steinberg, it’s a 10-year extension worth $503 Million. He gets $477M in guarantee mechanisms and ability to have outs if guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised. Mahomes also has a no-trade clause. It is the richest contract in American sports history.
The 2018 league MVP has security, and the Chiefs have their quarterback signed for the next decade and beyond. Maybe Mahomes could have waited and probably got a bigger deal after this season, but you can’t argue with him taking the money now.
Back in April, Kansas City picked up Mahomes’ fifth-year option, which put him under contract for the next two seasons at $27.6 million. With this extension, Mahomes will be under contract until 2032.
“I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players.” Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “The best part is he’s still early in his career. He’s a natural leader and always grinding, whether that’s on the field, in the weight room, or watching film; he wants to be the best. He’s a competitor, and his teammates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization, and we are blessed he’s going to be our quarterback for years to come.”
The Super Bowl LIV MVP is the best quarterback in football, and last season, he threw for 4031 yards and 26 touchdowns. More importantly, the 24-year-old Mahomes led the Chiefs to their second Super Bowl victory in franchise history.
