Giants rookie QB Daniel Jones has had his moments in 2019. At times, he has been extraordinary, and at other times, he has been a turnover machine. However, Jones has shown that he is an NFL caliber quarterback.
Jones has a nine-game streak with a touchdown pass, which is the longest by a Giants quarterback since Eli Manning’s 10-game streak spanning the 2015-16 seasons. The nine consecutive games tie Charlie Conerly’s Giants rookie record set in 1948. Jones can break the mark Sunday at home against the Green Bay Packers.
In nine starts, the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft has thrown for 2134 yards, 17 touchdowns(most among rookies), but turnovers have been an issue. Jones has committed 18 turnovers(8 interceptions, 10 fumbles lost) this season.
Through all the ups and downs, Jones continues to turn heads, and one player that has been impressed by Jones is Giants RB Saquon Barkley, and according to Barkley, Jones has the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in football.
“Just his grit. He gets drafted here; he gets booed when he gets drafted here,” Barkley said on Wednesday. “All you guys said we shouldn’t have drafted him, he puts that aside, and the only thing he cares about is this sport and this team and the guys in the locker room. If he continues to have that, I think he is going to be one of the best quarterbacks, if not the best quarterback, in the league, and I truly believe that.”
Jones looks like he has the goods. He has made plays with both his arm and legs. But, he has to fix the turnovers, which is expected from a rookie, but that’s fixable. If Jones fixes the turnover issues, he has the potential to do some big things in the NFL.
