Unified champion Jarrett Hurd handled his business on the Wilder-Fury undercard when he stopped Jason Welborn in the fourth round. After the fight, WBC junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo stepped into the ring to call out Hurd, but that fight won’t happen unless Charlo beats Tony Harrison on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
However, before any fight with Charlo, Hurd would like to fight in his backyard. The Accokeek, Maryland native is looking to fight near his hometown.
“We not sure exactly who the opponent gonna be, but it’s going to be a great name,” Hurd told goforitradio.com. “They gave some names where you guys are going to be happy with the matchup.”
One of the names could be Julian Williams, who according to Fox Sports Boxing insider Mike Coppinger, could be fighting Hurd or Jermell Charlo sometime in the spring. Williams is mandatory challenger for both Hurd and Charlo. If it is Williams, that won’t be an easy fight for Hurd. Williams is tough out for anybody at 154.
But the fight that everybody wants to see is a unification fight with Charlo, so hopefully, both fighters can win their respective fights, and we can see the most significant fight at 154 sometime in 2019.
