Redskins QB Kirk Cousins is off to a decent start this season. Cousins, who have the Redskins off to a 2-1 start, is coming off an impressive performance in a win against the Raiders last Sunday when he threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns.
After not being able to agree on a long-term deal, Cousins has signed the franchise tender the past two seasons in Washington.
If Cousins continues to play well, he will get that elusive long-term deal from the Redskins or somebody else.
Former Redskins QB Mark Rypien, who was the last Redskins QB to lead the team to a Super Bowl, believes the Redskins made a mistake by not signing Cousins to a long-term deal:
“I think they should have signed him to a long-term deal,” Rypien told TMZ Sports. “We’ll see how the rest of the season goes, but I don’t think if it goes as well as it looks right now, they’re gonna get Kirk Cousins to come back in Washington, which is unfortunate.”
While Cousins, 29, has been solid over the past two seasons, you can understand why the Redskins are reluctant to give him a long-term deal. I don’t think anyone can say definitively that Cousins is a franchise-caliber quarterback.
However, if he does continue to get better, Cousins might decide to go elsewhere, which as Rypien said, would be unfortunate.
