Coming into the game against the Redskins, Saints QB Drew Brees needed 201 yards to surpass Peyton Manning and become the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards. Brees would only need a half to break the record. The 39-year-old QB threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns by halftime, including a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Quan Smith to break the record.

Brees would finish the game 26-29 for 363 yards and three touchdowns as the Saints routed the Redskins 43-19 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Monday night.

Washington’s secondary had a bad night, and according to Hall of Famer and former Saints star Willie Roaf, the Skins’ defensive performance was awful.

“That game the Redskins played last week, I’ve seen better coverage in 7-on-7 at practice with just the DBs and the quarterback and the receivers without an offensive line,” Roaf told the Go4it podcast hosted by Paul Gant. “They were not even covering those guys.

“I don’t know what they were doing, but the way the Washington Redskins played in that game, and the lack of coverage, guys running wide open down the field. I mean that would get a coach fired. You can’t have guys running that wide open in the NFL, and not be in coverage. That one to break the record before the half, the kid(Tre’Quan Smith) was running wide open. I don’t know what the Redskins were doing, but that was not NFL football. They were running up and down the field, and some of those guys were not even being covered. I don’t know what they were doing.”

Before their game against the Saints, the Redskins defense had been playing reasonably well. Prior to the Saints’ game, Washington was allowing only 14.7 points per game, and in all fairness to the Redskins, Brees has been playing some good football this year. He has thrown 11 touchdowns and has yet to throw an interception in 2018.

The good thing for Washington is that it’s just one game, and they’ll have an opportunity to bounce back against the Panthers on Sunday at FedEx Field.

We’ll wait and see if the Skins’ defense can get back on track against Carolina.
