Peiicans’ Griffin: ‘Brandon Ingram has earned this contract extension by virtue of everything he has accomplished

The New Orleans Pelicans have re-signed forward Brandon Ingram, the team announced today.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, it’s a five-year, $158 million max extension with the Pelicans.

“Brandon Ingram has earned this contract extension by virtue of everything he has accomplished that is visible, but we are grateful to be able to deliver it to him because of everything he has done that has remained largely hidden to those outside this organization,” said Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin. “His tireless work ethic and dedication to his craft are matched only by his desires to help deliver long-term success for his team, our fan base, and the communities he lives in.”

The 23-year-old Ingram, who was acquired by New Orleans in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers last summer, is coming off his best professional season in 2019-20, earning his first All-Star Game selection and winning the 2019-20 NBA Most Improved Player Award. In 62 games last season, the four-year veteran averaged career-highs highs in multiple categories, including points (23.8 – ranked 14th in NBA), rebounds (6.1), assists (4.2), and steals (0.9).

Selected second overall out of Duke University in the 2016 NBA Draft, Ingram has appeared in 252 career games with the Lakers and Pelicans, holding career averages of 16.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.

Steven Adams signs contract extension with Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans and center Steven Adams have agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, it’s two-year, $35 million extension.

The 27-year old Adams was acquired by New Orleans in a four-team trade involving Denver, Milwaukee and Oklahoma City.

The seven-year veteran spent his entire seven-year career with the Thunder.  In 2019-20, Adams averaged 10.9 points on .592 shooting from the floor, 9.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks.

Selected 12th overall out of the University of Pittsburgh in the 2013 NBA Draft, Adams ranks fifth all-time in OKC/Seattle franchise history in blocks (531) and first in field goal percentage.

Pelicans promote former WNBA star Teresa Weatherspoon to assistant coach

The New Orleans Pelicans announced on Monday the hiring of Bob Beyer, Casey Hill, and Rex Walters as assistant coaches, along with Corey Brewer and Beno Udrih as player development coaches. They join Assistant Coach Fred Vinson and Teresa Weatherspoon, who has been promoted to assistant coach, and Player Development Coach Darnell Lazare on Head Coach Stan Van Gundy’s staff.

“I am excited about our coaching staff,” said Van Gundy. “We have a great mix of background, experience, perspective and expertise. Four of our assistants have been head coaches at the professional or NCAA Division I levels. Five of our coaches played in the NBA or WNBA. Three coaches have institutional knowledge having worked for Griff, Trajan and current Pelicans players, while three others have worked with me and two bring us an entirely new perspective. I am looking forward to working with this staff to maximize the potential of our talented players.”

The 54-year-old Weatherspoon returns for her second season with New Orleans after serving as a two-way player development coach in 2019-20. Prior to joining the Pelicans, Weatherspoon served as the director of player and franchise development with the WNBA’s New York Liberty from 2016-19. Weatherspoon was recently enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts as part of the 2019 class.

Pelicans name Stan Van Gundy head coach

Stan Van Gundy has returned to coaching. On Thursday, the New Orleans Pelicans named Van Gundy as the team’s head coach.

“I am honored and excited to coach this talented group of players in New Orleans,” said Van Gundy. “This opportunity was one that I was really attracted to due in large part to David Griffin’s record of putting together highly competitive, talented teams in a great family atmosphere. When I got into the interview process and had a chance to meet with Mrs. Benson, Dennis Lauscha, Griff, Trajan Langdon, Swin Cash, and the Pelicans front office, it became clear how committed and invested they are to winning.”

The 61-year-old Van Gundy, who spent last season as a game analyst for TNT and studio analyst for NBA TV, last served as the head coach and president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons from 2014-18.

Van Gundy’s most successful stint came in Orlando. He helped lead the Magic to five consecutive postseason appearances, highlighted by an Eastern Conference Championship in 2009. During his tenure with the Magic, the team compiled a 259-135 (.657) regular season record, and Van Gundy was selected as head coach of the Eastern Conference for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game. From 2007-11, Van Gundy’s Magic teams finished in the top five each season in plus/minus, and top 10 each season in three-point shooting, offensive rating, and defensive rating.

New Orleans is a team with a lot of potential. Obviously, they have Zion Williamson. Also, the Pelicans have the league’s Most Improved Player in Brandon Ingram, Jrue Holiday, and they have a 2020 lottery pick, so this team could have a very bright future, which will give Van Gundy a great chance to win in New Orleans.

Jrue Holiday named NBA Teammate of the Year

New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday is the recipient of the 2019-20 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award, the NBA announced on Tuesday.

The Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award recognizes the NBA player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on- and off-court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to his team. A panel of league executives selected six players from each conference with current players voting for one overall winner.

The award is named for Basketball Hall of Famers Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman, friends and teammates on the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals from 1955 until 1958. In the final game of the 1957-58 season, Stokes suffered an on-court brain injury, fell into a coma days later and was left permanently paralyzed. Diagnosed with posttraumatic encephalopathy, which damaged his motor-control center, Stokes was supported for the rest of his life by Twyman, who became his legal guardian and advocate.

“There isn’t a more deserving player nor one that better embodies what this award signifies, on and off the court, than Jrue Holiday,” said Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin. “Jrue’s concern for and connection to his community is at the heart of everything we want this organization to represent. The work that he and his wife Lauren have done locally in New Orleans, as well as in Southern California and Indiana cannot go unnoticed, and his willingness to donate his full remaining salary following the restart of the 2019-2020 season to the ongoing fight for social justice further demonstrates what type of human being Jrue is. We are honored and grateful that Jrue is part of our Pelicans family.”

On July 15, Holiday announced that he would donate the remainder of his 2019-20 season salary to start a social justice fund with his wife, Lauren. The Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund aims to combat systemic racism and address social and economic inequalities across communities in New Orleans, the Los Angeles area and Indianapolis. The funds will also support local Black-led non-profit organizations, citywide initiatives that seek to bring about equitable outcomes for Black and Brown communities, and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) of higher education.

Holiday is the first player in Pelicans franchise history to earn Teammate of the Year honors, and becomes the eighth player in league history to win the award, joining Chauncey Billups (2013), Shane Battier (2014), Tim Duncan (2015), Vince Carter (2016), Dirk Nowitzki (2017), Jamal Crawford (2018) and Mike Conley Jr. (2019).

Pelicans win the Lottery, Zion Williamson next?

The New Orleans Pelicans have not had much to cheer about this season. Their star player Anthony Davis asked for a trade in January, and the season was a mess the rest of the way. However, things got a little better on Tuesday night.

The Pelicans win the Lottery! New Orleans will draft first in the 2019 NBA Draft, which means they will probably get Duke phenom, Zion Williamson. The Pelicans jumped from seven to the number one spot in the draft. Vice president of basketball operations David Griffin now has more ways to try to convince Davis to return or use Davis in a trade to build around Williamson.

Will Davis change his mind and stay in New Orleans? Who knows, but if you’re the Pelicans, you have a guy in Williamson who could be a franchise player for years to come.

Under this year’s new NBA Draft Lottery system, the odds at the top of the lottery were leveled so that the three teams with the lowest regular-season winning percentages (New York, Cleveland and Phoenix) each had a 14 percent chance of receiving the No. 1 overall pick. Drawings were held at tonight’s Draft Lottery to determine the first four picks in the 2019 NBA Draft presented by State Farm. The full results of tonight’s Draft Lottery are as follows:

  1. New Orleans Pelicans
  2. Memphis Grizzlies
  3. New York Knicks
  4. Los Angeles Lakers
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers
  6. Phoenix Suns
  7. Chicago Bulls
  8. Atlanta Hawks
  9. Washington Wizards
  10. Atlanta Hawks
  11. Minnesota Timberwolves
  12. Charlotte Hornets
  13. Miami Heat
  14. Boston Celtics
