Giants sign Landon Collins to practice squad

The New York Giants signed a familiar face on Friday as the team signed S Landon Collins to their practice squad. Collins met the Giants in London for their game against the Packers.

Collins, 28, spent the previous three seasons with the Washington Commanders, and he was cut by the team in March after Collins refused to take a pay cut. He missed the final nine games of the 2020 season with an Achilles injury and the last three in 2021 after going on injured reserve with a foot injury.

“We do these workouts Mondays, Tuesdays, a lot of them,” coach Brian Daboll said. “He happened to be a guy that had a good workout. So, really like all the players, you can see the practice squad kind of changing. It’s changed a lot since we first started. It will probably change more. So, get him in. Let him learn our system and see how it goes.”

The three-time Pro Bowler joined the Giants as a second-round draft choice in 2015 from the University of Alabama, the 33rd overall selection. He has started all 94 regular season and postseason games he has played, including 60 for the Giants (one in the playoffs).

The eight-year veteran’s best season was in 2016, when he led the team in tackles with 125 (100 solo). The 125 tackles are the most by a safety in Giants history. He also had five interceptions, 4.0 sacks, and 13 passes defensed. Collins was the first player in NFL history to have 100 or more solo tackles and at least 2.0 sacks, five interceptions, and 12 passes defensed.

Collins was an All-Pro in 2016. In addition, he made the Pro Bowl in 2017 and 2018.

Giants’ Bethea on NY’s recent moves: ‘I know some Giants fans might not like it, but it’s just a part of the business’

The New York Giants have overhauled their roster this offseason. Gone are three of the team’s best players in 2018: Odell Beckham Jr., Landon Collins, and Olivier Vernon. Some might say this team is rebuilding, but according to the newest Giant, safety Antoine Bethea, who signed with the team after two seasons in Arizona, the Giants are not rebuilding.

“No, it’s not a rebuilding team,” Bethea said at a press conference today. “At the end of the day, we have to go out and play on Sundays. Regardless of the names you have on paper, you still have to go out there and perform. You get a good nucleus, some good guys that can work together. Obviously, the league year just started. I know upstairs, they’re doing what they need to do to build a great team. As players, our job is to come out there and put our best performance, our best foot forward and put the best product we can put on the field.”

Obviously, after the moves the Giants have made thus far in the offseason, many Giants fans are unhappy, but the 13-year-old veteran knows that the business of football can be very tricky.

“I’ve been in this league a long time, and I’ve seen things go on,” Bethea said. “It’s just a part of the business. I know some Giants fans might not like it, but it’s just a part of the business, and we have to keep going.”

It should be interesting to see what the 2019 Giants look like when the season starts. On paper, it seems like a rebuild. However, we’ll have to see the other moves this team makes in the offseason to get a definite answer on whether the Giants are looking to win now or later.
