Eagles OC Steichen talks the departure of J.J. Arcega-Whiteside

On Monday, the Philadelphia Eagles traded WR/TE J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to the Seahawks for DB Ugo Amadi.

Arcega-Whiteside was drafted in the second round by Philadelphia in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Stanford. A few picks later, the Seahawks, Arcega-Whiteside’s new team, selected stud wideout, DK Metcalf.

Last season, Arcega-Whiteside was primarily on special teams, and in 2022, the 25-year-old was hoping to catch on with the Eagles as a tight end, but like the rest of his career in Philly, it just did not work out.

In three seasons with the Eagles, Arcega-Whiteside caught only 16 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown, which occurred on a fumble recovery.

On Tuesday, Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen discussed the departure of Arcega-Whiteside.

“You know what, I’ll say this about [former Eagles TE] J.J. [Arcega-Whiteside], J.J. is a great person, had a great work ethic,” Steichen said. “He did some good things here for us, but I’m really excited about his new chapter in Seattle and wish him nothing but the best.

In addition, Steichen discussed Arcega-Whiteside’s transition to tight end.

“I think you’re outside wide, and now you go inside to start blocking defensive ends,” he said. “It’s a whole new world in there. He battled; he did a nice job while he was at it, but like I said, wish him nothing but the best in Seattle.”

Arcega-Whiteside was a big miss for the Eagles, but with the additions of DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown, Philly has finally addressed the wide receiver position going forward.

Philadelphia will have joint practices with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday and Thursday. On Sunday, the Eagles will play the Browns on the road in their second preseason game.
