Zimmer on Cousins in big games: ‘I see that statistic and obviously it’s not a good statistic’

Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings came up small in the biggest game of the year. With an opportunity to make the playoffs, Cousins and the Vikings were dominated by the Bears 24-10 at home last Sunday.

In that game, Cousins did not play his best football. He was 20/33 for only 132 yards and one touchdown. Not good enough for a guy you gave a three-year, $84 million deal to last offseason.

Including his career with Redskins, Cousins is now 5-25 against teams with winning records, and is 0-1 in the playoffs.

Today, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer discussed the play of Cousins in 2018.

Q: Are you concerned about Kirk Cousins’ performances in big games and clutch situations?

Zimmer: “I see that statistic and obviously it’s not a good statistic. Quite honestly, it’s about the football team. One guy doesn’t win games around here; one guy doesn’t lose games. I don’t take it that way. I have a lot of confidence in Kirk. I’ve talked to him, I’ve talked to some other people about how I can help him better and things that I can do moving forward and so he’s going to come out and play really good next year.”

Q: In what ways did Kirk Cousins live up to your expectations and what you would like to see him improve on?

Zimmer: “Certainly there’s a lot of things in both areas. I really don’t want to get into specifics, sit here in front of all of you and tell you what he can get better at. I’d rather talk to him about those things. As far as the things he did good, number one he came in here and was a great teammate. He studied real hard; he worked extremely hard at everything he was trying to get done. I do think there are some areas he could get better at and I’m sure he’d tell you the same thing.”

Q: Was his play this season what you expected from him?

Zimmer: I think it’s more about the combination of the team, not one particular player.

Cousins(4298 yards, 30 TD/10 INT) put up good numbers in 2018, but he has to be better in big games. Minnesota not making the playoffs is not all on Cousins, but when you pay a guy that type of money, you are expecting a huge return, especially with the Vikings coming off an NFC title game appearance in 2017.

Cousins was surrounded by a lot of talented players in Minnesota. However, in the end, he was not able to get it done.

DeGale-Eubank Jr. set for February 23

James DeGale and Chris Eubank Jr will clash at London’s O2 on February 23 in the first major UK event of the new deal between ITV and Haymon Sports’ Premier Boxing Champions, it has been announced.

The Super Middleweight match, to be screened exclusively live on ITV Box Office, will take place against a backdrop of hostility between two fighters who have long made no secret of their mutual dislike and are relishing the prospect of settling their differences in the ring.

James DeGale has already fired off an opening shot in the direction of his opponent.

“Really excited and looking forward to being back home to a fight of this magnitude,” DeGale said. “I believe Eubank doesn’t have the pedigree, the size and skill to beat me. Eubank is a decent fighter but every time he has stepped up he has been found out. He has called my name for a long time so now I’ve finally got my chance to zip his lips.”

Eubank Jr responded in kind, saying: “DeGale is going to get the schooling of his career. A good old-fashioned hiding.”

Poxon Sport is the promoter of DeGale v Eubank Jr, as the exclusive promoter of all UK PBC events on ITV.

Full details of the undercard and how to access this ITV Box Office PPV event across all platforms will be announced and made available in due course. For updated and further information, please go to  www.itvboxoffice.com

News of the DeGale v Eubank Jr showdown follows the announcement at the end of December of two major world title fights to be shown free to air on ITV4 as part of the broad scope of the ITV and PBC deal. On Sunday, January 13, Jose Uzcategui defends his IBF Super Middleweight World Championship against unbeaten top challenger Caleb Plant.  Coverage will come live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The following weekend, on 19 January, ITV4’s coverage will come live from Las Vegas where Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBA world welterweight title against Adrien Broner.  The exclusive ITV4 coverage will also include the much-anticipated showdown between Badou Jack and Marcus Browne for the WBA Interim Light Heavyweight title.

Late last year, ITV announced a ground-breaking new deal with Haymon Sports and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) to bring exclusive coverage of exciting PBC world-class boxing events to ITV viewers and fight fans in the UK.

The unique collaboration is the first time that Haymon Sports and PBC has partnered with a UK broadcaster to stage boxing events regularly in the UK. The exclusive three-year deal will guarantee a minimum of 15 televised events each year, drawing from PBC’s unrivalled group of over 160 of the best boxers in the world, which includes more than 60 current and former world champions in matches staged both in the UK and the US. PBC, the sports’ pre-eminent boxing brand, is broadcast over cable and network television in the United States.

The world-class action from events for the next three years will include free-to-air broadcasts on ITV’s channels, including ITV main channel and ITV4 and ITV Hub, and will also include pay per views on ITV’s PPV channel, ITV Box Office.

This new deal for boxing adds to ITV Sport’s portfolio of first class events, which includes exclusive free to air coverage of the England football team’s qualifiers for both the European Championship and World Cup, the 6 Nations and exclusive coverage of the Rugby World Cup, UK horse racing, the Tour de France and the French Open.

Spurs recall Lonnie Walker IV from G League

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have recalled guard Lonnie Walker IV from the Austin Spurs of the NBA G League.

The 20-year-old Walker was assigned to the G League back in November. The rookie guard underwent surgery back in October after tearing his right medial meniscus during the preseason.

In 11 games with Austin, Walker IV has averaged 14.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 25.8 minutes.

Guillermo Rigondeaux returns January 13

Former world champion and pound-for-pound contender Guillermo Rigondeaux will return to action against Mexico’s Giovanni Delgado in an eight-round match on Premier Boxing Champions Prelims live on FS1 and FOX Deportes on Sunday, January 13 from the Microsoft Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

The Prelims show begins at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT with hard-hitting 2016 Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (7-0, 7 KOs) in an eight round super lightweight fight. Also light heavyweight power-puncher Ahmed Elbiali (17-1, 14 KOs) takes on Oklahoma’sAllan Green (33-5, 22 KOs), which will be shown on the telecast if time allows.

Prelims precede a Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 and FOX Deportes show that features IBF Super Middleweight World Champion Jose Uzcategui taking on unbeaten Caleb Plant in the main event. Coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will also see unbeaten featherweight Brandon Figueroa take on Moises Flores and sensational prospect Joey Spencer entering the ring.

In an anticipated rematch Ryan “Cowboy” Karl (15-2, 9 KOs) meets Kevin Watts (12-3, 5 KOs) for an eight-round super lightweight FS1 TV swing bout. Watts stopped Karl in the fifth round of their exciting April bout.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Zanfer Promotions, start at $50, are on sale now and can be purchased at AXS.com.

Rigondeaux (17-1, 11 KOs) will step into the ring against Mexico’s Giovanni Delgado (16-8, 9 KOs) for a super bantamweight attraction as he seeks to show off the masterful technical skills that made him a unified world champion and perennial member of the pound-for-pound list. A two-time Olympic gold medalist for his native Cuba, Rigondeaux made his name with victories over the likes of Nonito Donaire, Rico Ramos and Joseph Agbeko. He will look to rebound from his defeat to Vasiliy Lomachenko last December when he competes on January 13 against the 27-year-old Delgado (16-8, 9 KOs).

A rising prospect from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Lindolfo Delgado picked up five knockout wins in 2018, after turning pro in 2017 following the 2016 Olympics. The 23-year-old will fight in the U.S. for the second time when he makes his 2019 debut on January 13.

Born in Cairo, Egypt and now living and training in Miami, Elbiali bounced back from a loss to former champion Jean Pascal with a third-round knockout of Zoltan Sera in June. The 28-year-old scored knockouts in 13 of his first 16 pro bouts and will take on Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Green, who most recently defeated Edgar Perez this year.

Andrade: ‘ I will prove I’m the best at middleweight in 2019’

Demetrius Andrade has vowed to dominate the Middleweight division in 2019 – starting with the first defense of his WBO World title against Artur Akavov on Friday January 18 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Andrade (26-0 16KOs) puts his WBO 160-pound crown on the line for the first time against the Russian in New York, and the two-weight World ruler is eager to kick off 2019 with a bang having returned to the ring in style in 2018.

The Rhode Island star picked up the WBO crown with a commanding win over Walter Kautondokwa in Boston in October, flooring the undefeated African four times in the opening four rounds in his first fight in a year and his first title bout at 160.

Andrade steps straight back into action and face-to-face with the ‘Wolverine’ Akavov (19-2 8KOs), who fights for the strap for the second time having ran previous incumbent Billy Joe Saunders close for the belt December 2016 in Glasgow.

‘Boo Boo’ knows that Akavov will put it all on the line in the Big Apple, but the champion wants to lay down a marker as the first of the Middleweight World champions to fight in 2019 – and he plans to prove that he will emerge as the top dog in a talent-heavy division with Canelo Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs, Gennady Golovkin, Jermall Charlo and Saunders amongst the huge names there for big fights.

“I’m out there trying to fight the undefeated guys, the champions, that’s what I want,” said Andrade. “I get in there with anyone at 160-pound, and I beat them all. It’s the time for the elite to fight each in 2019, people want to see me fight the big names and I want them.

“It’s going to happen, I am here, I’ve got the World title and I want the best. Akavov is coming to New York to take that title from me so I know that I have to be on my game as he’s a dangerous man, but trust me, when I shine on January 18, we’re going for all the big names next.

“My first fight was meant to be Saunders – an undefeated champion – and then I beat another undefeated fighter to win the title. That’s what I am about and that’s what I want my year to be, champion vs. champion, Demetrius Andrade vs. the best out there.”

Andrade clashes with Akavov on a huge night of action in New York, with a second World title bout on the card sees Amanda Serrano (35-1-1 26KOs) gunning for history as she looks to land World honors in an extraordinary seventh weight class as she meets WBC and IBF World Super-Flyweight champion Eva Voraberger (24-5 11KOs) – the Austrian tasked with stopping Serrano’s bid for glory.

Former World Lightweight ruler Jorge Linares continues his comeback trail on the card when he meets Pablo Cesar Cano. Linares’ (45-4 28KOs) reign as WBA and Ring Magazine champion was ended in an epic clash with pound-for-pound star Vasily Lomachenko at Madison Square Garden in May, with Linares felling the Ukrainian star in the sixth before being stopped four rounds later.

Linares returned to winning ways in September with a third round stoppage win over Abner Cotto in September in California and starts 2019 with his 50th pro fight against Cano (31-7-1 21KOs), the Mexican former World title challenger who landed the WBC International Silver strap in his last outing in September – and Linares is joined by fellow Golden Boy Boxing star Alexis Rocha (12-0 8KOs), the 21 year old Welterweight talent ready to begin his charge for titles in 2019.

Former World Super-Lightweight champion Chris Algieri (22-3 8KOs) made his return from two years out of the ring in November with a ten round win in Huntington, Long Island, and the 34 year old faces fellow New Yorker Danny Gonzalez (17-1-1 7KOs) in his second bout back, with the carrot of major fights later in the year dangling in front of Algieri.

One of Matchroom Boxing USA’s rising stars tastes his first action in 2019 on the card as Reshat Mati (2-0 1KO) returns to the scene of his last outing in October where the ‘Albanian Bear’ went the four round distance in his second fight.

Pacquiao: ‘My goal is to knock out Broner’

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs), boxer laureate and the sweet science’s only eight-division world champion, has a goal.  That goal is to knock out his next opponent, Cincinnati’s Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-3-1, 24 KOs), when they collide on Saturday, January 19, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Presented by Premier Boxing Champions, the Pacquiao vs. Broner WBA welterweight world championship event will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

“I am not making a prediction but my goal is to knock out Broner,” said Manny on Monday as he was wrapping his hands before starting a rigorous workout, which included 12 rounds of hitting the mitts with world-famous Freddie Roach, at Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club.  “I am looking for a knockout against Broner.  I have to maximize the opportunity.  I forgot how much fun winning a fight by knockout was until I stopped Lucas Matthyssee last summer to win the WBA welterweight title.  It felt great to win that way and the fans loved it too, so why not try for it again?   I have nothing personal against Adrien Broner.  This fight is strictly business.  He is fun.  He makes me laugh.  He knows how to sell himself and to sell a fight.”

It’s been strictly business tor Manny at Wild Card since beginning his U.S. training camp on Christmas Eve.  No shutdowns or holidays have kept him away.  After celebrating New Year’s Eve with a five-mile run up the hills to the Hollywood sign and 12-rounds of mitt work with Roach, Manny began 2019 the same way he ended 2018, only this time he sparred 12 rounds with three younger sparring partners in addition to a full session of bag work capped off with 1,000 sit-ups.

“He runs like a deer,” said Justin Fortune, who oversees Manny’s strength and conditioning.  “No one can keep up with him.  That’s the secret to his success — his work ethic and his stamina.  He has the strongest foundation of any fighter with whom I’ve worked.  His legs and calves still generate more power and speed than younger fighters.”

“I am very pleased with the training camp Manny has had.  His footwork, distance and angles are all coming together nicely,” said trainer Buboy Fernandez.  “When he hits the mitts it sounds like an explosion.  I have never felt such raw power.”

Gervonta Davis explains how the rift started between him and Farmer(VIDEO)

The beef between 130-pound champions Tevin Farmer and Gervonta Davis seems real. The two have engaged in a public feud for the past few years, and It’s obvious, these two really don’t like each other.

The biggest question is how did it begin?

Listen below as Davis explains why he dislikes Tevin Farmer:

Let’s hope that these two can eventually settle their issues with each other in the ring!

Roaf on Chiefs: ‘I think not having Hunt back there is going to hurt them moving forward’

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC West title, clinched a bye, and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs in the AFC after beating the Raiders 35-3 at Arrowhead. The Chiefs will have two weeks to rest up before they play in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

As they go into the playoffs, you wonder how the Chiefs will perform, especially without star RB Kareem Hunt, who was released from the team in November after a video surfaced of Hunt and a woman being involved in a physical altercation back in February.

Not having Hunt could hurt this team come playoff time. The hope is that Spencer Ware, who is battling hamstring and shoulder injuries, and Damien Williams, who had over a hundred yards in Week 16 against the Seahawks, can carry the load for this team come playoff time. Not bad options, but none as good as Hunt.

While the Chiefs still have many weapons on the offensive of the ball, Hall of Famer Willie Roaf, who played for Chiefs from 2002-2005, thinks Kansas City is going to miss what Hunt brings to the table come playoff time.

“I think the loss of Hunt is going to hurt them more than it has shown,” Roaf recently told the Go4it podcast hosted by Paul Gant. “I mean Hunt could get out the backfield, and he took the pressure off of them because he can run and catch it out the backfield. And he was so versatile, and he really helped spread that offense open for those other guys, so I think not having Hunt back there is going to hurt them moving forward. Can they get past that? We’ll see. I don’t know how far they can go now that Hunt is gone. He’s a Pro-Bowl, All-Pro type of running back, so I don’t care, when you lose somebody like that, it’s going to hurt.”

Patrick Mahomes and that Chiefs’ defense have to step up their play in the absence of Hunt if the Chiefs want to get to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta. The AFC is wide open, and by the having home-field throughout the playoffs, the Chiefs have the advantage.

Spence thinks Keith Thurman will try to avoid him(VIDEO)

We have been waiting for two of the biggest names at 147, IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. and WBA champion Keith Thurman to battle it out in the ring. Well, we might have to wait a little longer.  Unfortunately, according to Thurman, he is not looking to fight Spence until 2020, which means we may have to wait a whole year for that fight to happen.

Here is how Spence reacted to that news:

“Man, I mess around and don’t even fight him,” Spence recently said on Thurman. “I probably won’t even fight him. Man, I honestly can’t wait that long, and he might get injured again, especially if I look good, and start stopping more people. He’ll probably get injured or hurt, or something crazy.”

Thurman, who has been out almost two years due to injury, will make his long-awaited return on January 26 against Josesito Lopez, while Spence will battle Mikey Garcia on March 16, and if all goes well, maybe at some point we’ll see Spence-Thurman.

I don’t think Thurman is scared. He has fought and beaten some of the top guys at 147, including Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter.

Here is what I think Thurman’s plan will be:

He is going to try to beat Lopez, rematch WBC champ Shawn Porter(if he beats Ugas) in a unification fight, and then fight Spence(if he beats Garcia and others) sometime in 2020. At least, that’s what I think his plan will be.

Complete list of opponents for all 32 NFL teams

The opponents for all 2019 regular-season games have been determined and a complete list of each team’s home and away matchups was issued today by the NFL.

The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

Under the formula, every team plays 16 games as follows:

  • Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games).
  • The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games)
  • The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games)
  • Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (2 games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.

Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired in the schedule rotation with the AFC and NFC West divisions.

The official 2019 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.

NFL Kickoff 2019 Weekend will begin on Thursday night, September 5, and the regular season will conclude on Sunday, December 29.

The season will conclude with Super Bowl LIV in Miami on Sunday, February 2, 2020.
