Pop: ‘Pau Gasol is an exceptional individual and the ultimate professional’

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they had reached a buyout agreement with Pau Gasol, and according to ESPN, Gasol is expected to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Currently, Milwaukee has the best record in basketball, and with the addition of Gasol, the Bucks add more size off the bench.

Interestingly enough, Gasol could battle his brother, Marc, who was recently acquired by the Raptors, at some point in the playoffs.

Gasol, 38, originally signed with the Spurs on July 14, 2016 and appeared in a total of 168 games with San Antonio, averaging 10.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 22.4 minutes. In 27 games, Gasol is averaging 4.2 points and 4.7 rebounds.

“Pau Gasol is an exceptional individual and the ultimate professional,” said Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich. “We are grateful for his contributions on the court, in the locker room and in our community.”

The 18-year NBA veteran and two-time champion is a four-time All-NBA selection and six-time All-Star. In 1,223 career NBA games (1,150 starts), Gasol has averaged 17.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.59 blocks in 33.5 minutes.

Gasol is one of four players in NBA history to record over 20,000 points, 11,000 rebounds, 3,500 assists and 1,500 blocks in his career, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tim Duncan, and Kevin Garnett.

Lara: ‘I’m going to take a big step in cleaning out the division on Saturday’

Former world champion Erislandy Lara and WBA Super Welterweight Champ Brian Castaño went face-to-face Thursday at the final press conference before they headline action this Saturday live on SHOWTIME from Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, and presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Lara, 35, is looking to regain his title after losing it to Jarrett Hurd last April, and while Lara lost to Hurd, he was excited to be apart of an action-packed fight.

“I had a great fight against Jarrett Hurd,” Lara said at a press conference on Thursday. “There was a height and weight difference on fight night, but that whole experience is history now. My focus is on Castaño and making this another great fight. It’s great to be a part of awards like Fight of the Year, but now I have to move on to what is next.”

At his advanced age, Lara does not have much time left in the sport, so all he wants at this stage of his career are the biggest and best fights out there.

“I just want the biggest fights. There are a lot of great fighters at this weight and around it,” Lara said. “I’m going to be ready for anyone who steps up to the challenge.

“I’m here to win and show everyone that I’m the best 154-pounder in the world. I’m going to take a big step in cleaning out the division on Saturday. I’m going to be at my best and bring home the victory.”

If he beats the tough Castaño, Lara will be right back in the mix at 154. If he loses, it should be interesting what he does next.

Eagles’ Cre’Von LeBlanc on Wentz: ‘We one-hundred percent ride with him’

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz had decent numbers in 2018(3074 yards, 21 touchdowns), but he also had some struggles last season. In 11 games, he was only 5-6 as a starter. Ultimately, because of a back injury, Wentz’s season ended after Week 14. Fortunately for Philadelphia, they had Super Bowl 52 MVP Nick Foles, who was able to guide the team to the divisional round of the playoffs where they would lose to the New Orleans Saints.

After the season, things got worse for Wentz. According to a report from the PhillyVoice, some teammates questioned Wentz as a leader, while others called him ‘selfish,’ and later, Wentz himself, acknowledged that he was not a good teammate last season.

However, according to Eagles corner Cre’Von LeBlanc, the team is still behind the third-year quarterback.

“I really don’t get into stuff like that,” LeBlanc recently told Paul Gant and the Go4it podcast. “What I can say is I know that Carson Wentz, he’s a great football player; he’s a great leader on our team, and he’s a great guy, and he’s going to do everything in his power to put his best foot forward and put us in the position we need to be in, and we one-hundred percent ride with him, so that’s all I can say.”

According to Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, Wentz will be the starter next season. Wentz is a very talented football player, and if it were not for his ACL injury in 2017, Wentz probably would have been the MVP of that season.

For Wentz, 2018 was supposed to be a year of redemption, but he just not was physically able to get it done. The Eagles are still in a good position with him at the helm, and hopefully, for the team, Wentz will be a better player and a better leader in 2019.

Luis Ortiz: ‘If fighters avoid me, there’s nothing I can do about it’

Heavyweight contender Luis Ortiz is a very talented fighter, and he is a guy that is high-risk with not much reward. Ortiz, 39, is a southpaw with serious power, which means facing him won’t be an easy night for any fighter in the heavyweight division, and on Saturday night, Ortiz will continue his march to a world title when he battles Christian Hammer at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Since losing to WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, Ortiz has stopped his last two opponents, but he knows if he continues to dominate, fighters might be reluctant to get in the ring with him.

“Whoever they put in front of me, I’m going to go in there and try to knock them out,” Ortiz said at a media workout on Wednesday. “I’m not going to change for anyone. If fighters avoid me, there’s nothing I can do about it.”

Recently, unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua said he would have some interest in Ortiz if he does not get Wilder or Tyson Fury, and while Ortiz has an interest in Joshua, the fight he really wants is a rematch with Wilder.

“If there is a chance to rematch Deontay Wilder, that’s the fight I want,” Ortiz said. “That’s the fight to make. I want to give the fans the fights they want.”

Erislandy Lara headlines the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® triple-header as the former long-reigning champion challenges Brian Castaño and also features exciting heavyweight contender Ortiz battling former world title challenger Christian Hammer in a 10-round contest. Coverage begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with once-beaten contenders Bryan De Gracia and Eduardo Ramirez squaring off for a 12-round featherweight clash.

Canelo on Jacobs: ‘We know his style is going to be very difficult’

Unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez has never been one to run from a challenge, and on May 4, he will face another guy who won’t be easy to beat in IBF middleweight champion Danny Jacobs, in a unification fight during Cinco de Mayo weekend. The champion-vs.-champion event will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

“I’ve always liked challenges, and this is not an exception,” Canelo said at a press conference on Wednesday. “We know what Daniel Jacobs brings: his ability, his qualities, his talent. He knows how to move well in the ring. We’ll do what we always do to prepare ourselves to the fullest and to give the fans a great fight. This is not going to be an exception, and we’re going to come out with our hands raised.

“We know his style is going to be very difficult, very complicated, but at this level, that’s what you have to face. We’re prepared, we’re going to train, and we’re going to work for whatever he’s going to bring.”

Jacobs brings a lot to the table, including size and skill, which he believes will be a factor on May 4.

“If you understand, boxing styles make fights,” Jacobs said. “You can’t automatically think that because he defeated Golovkin, he’ll beat me. Physically I’m the bigger man. Golovkin was bigger than him, and I’m bigger than Golovkin. Rocky was the biggest fighter that Canelo has faced, but he didn’t possess the skill set that I have. So, that’s the difference.”

This is one of the better fights that can be made in boxing, and could the best fight on the boxing schedule in 2019.

Claressa Shields: ‘I want to make her(Hammer) quit’

Two undefeated middleweight champions went face-to-face Tuesday as Claressa Shields, and Christina Hammer met in New York at a press conference ahead of their battle for the undisputed women’s middleweight championship Saturday, April 13 live on SHOWTIME from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

In only eight fights, Shields has become the face of women’s boxing, and now she has the opportunity to beat another great champion in Hammer. As Shields pointed out, this is a super fight.

“I think for women’s boxing this is a true super fight that we’ve never gotten before,” Shields said. “We’ve never had a fight like this in women’s boxing. It’s great to make this happen and us being from two parts of the world makes this fight even better.

“This has been long overdue. I’m just glad that Hammer is here and the fight is set,” Shields said. “She’s been at my fights before, but I can’t wait to get inside the ring and show her I’m the real champion.”

Hammer won’t be an easy out for Shields. She is 24-0 for a reason, and while Hammer is undefeated, Shields is not very impressed by Hammer’s previous opponents. The 23-year-old Shields believes she has the better resume.

“I’ve traveled to many different countries and dethroned champions around the world,” Shields said. “At the end of the day, I’m coming to fight, and I recognize that she’s a great champion. To be a champion for all those years shows that she’s a good fighter. But I also look at resumes, and her resume is not as good as mine.”

Shields is hoping to make Hammer quit on April 13, and two-time gold medalist thinks she has the power to do it.

“She’s not the tallest girl I’ve ever fought. I’m stronger than her and I know it. I got up from a knockdown and won. She can’t do that. I don’t believe she knows how to fight on the inside, but she better learn.

“I want to make her quit. I don’t want her to just know I’m a good fighter, I want her to know I’m great. I wish we could go 12 rounds, but I’ll be prepared for all 10 rounds.”

The SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will feature a long-awaited unification in what is arguably the most significant event in women’s boxing history. In addition to world titles from all four sanctioning bodies, this fight will be for the Ring Magazine Women’s Middleweight Championship, the first time a Ring divisional title has been at stake in a women’s boxing match.

Kellerman: ‘If Giannis is knocking down threes, he’s gonna be the best player that ever lived, that includes Jordan'(VIDEO)

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is having an MVP-caliber season, and at this point, with Bucks having the best record in the NBA, his chances of winning the award are excellent. He can do it all; he can handle, drive and finish in the lane, and in 55 games, Giannis is averaging 27.2 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists.

However, Giannis does have a flaw, and that is his shooting ability. He is shooting just 24% from downtown, but on Saturday, Giannis was on fire. He shot 3-4 from beyond the arc and finished with 27 points as the Bucks beat the Timberwolves 140-128.

According to ESPN’s Max Kellerman, if Giannis can ever gets a consistent jumper, he could be the greatest of all-time.

Lomachenko-Crolla set for April 12 in Los Angeles

After thrilling Big Apple audiences in his last three bouts, Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko is ready to bring his lightweight world titles to the City of Angels.

Lomachenko, the pound-for-pound Picasso and the WBA and WBO lightweight world champion, will defend his titles against former lightweight world champion Anthony “Million Dollar” Crolla on Friday, April 12 at Staples Center. In the co-feature, longtime WBO super middleweight world champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez will make his light heavyweight debut against an opponent to be announced in a 10-rounder.

Lomachenko-Crolla and Ramirez’s fight will stream live and exclusively in the United States beginning at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on ESPN+ —  the direct-to-consumer subscription streaming service, which will mark its one-year anniversary since launching on the day of the fight. The entire undercard will also stream live on ESPN+ starting at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Matchroom Boxing USA, tickets priced at $310.50, $207, $103.50, $77.65, and $51.75 (including facility fees) go on sale Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 12 p.m. PT. Lomachenko’s last headlining appearance in Los Angeles came in August 2017 at the Microsoft Theater when he defended his 130-pound world title against Miguel Marriaga via seventh-round TKO.

“Staples Center is the perfect venue to showcase one of boxing’s great fighters, Vasiliy Lomachenko, who will test himself against a top contender in Anthony Crolla of Great Britain,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum.

“Los Angeles boxing fans are passionate and knowledgeable, and I look forward to putting on a spectacular show for them at Staples Center,” Lomachenko said. “Crolla is my mandatory challenger, and I like that he always comes to fight. He’s going to make the most of this opportunity.”

Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) entered the professional ranks following an amateur career that included a pair of Olympic gold medals for his native Ukraine and an unprecedented 396-1 record. He set a boxing record by winning world titles in three weight classes in 12 fights, shattering the previous mark of 20 set by Jeff Fenech 30 years prior. He was named 2017 Fighter of the Year by most boxing outlets after forcing all three of his opponents — Jason Sosa, Marriaga and fellow two-time Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux — to quit on their stools.

In May 2018, he moved up in weight and captured the WBA lightweight title when he rebounded from a torn labrum and a sixth-round knockdown to stop Jorge Linares at Madison Square Garden with a body shot in the 10th round. That December, in front of a sold-out Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden crowd, he scored a pair of knockdowns and won a wide unanimous decision over WBO lightweight champion Jose “Sniper” Pedraza to unify titles.

Ramirez (39-0, 25 KOs) is ready to make his mark at light heavyweight after making five successful defenses of his WBO world title. The native of Mazatlán, Mexico, is a 10-year pro who won the world title in April 2016 with a shutout unanimous decision over two-weight world champion Arthur Abraham. In his last bout, Dec. 14 in Corpus Christi, Texas, he closed the show strong and defeated Jesse “Hollywood” Hart via majority decision. Ramirez, who has not ruled out returning to super middleweight to defend his title, also has his sights set on the light heavyweight division’s leading names.

“I am very motivated because of all the new things I have been doing to advance my career,” Ramirez said. “I am very excited to fight at Staples Center for the first time, as I consider Los Angeles my second home. I knew there will be many Latino fans supporting me. I want to become an idol of Mexican boxing, and nothing will stop me as I work to fulfill my dreams. I am also working with a new trainer, Julian Chua, who is pushing me to become the best fighter possible.”

Bills’ Lorenzo Alexander on Josh Allen: ‘He’s a playmaker’

In 2018, the Buffalo Bills may have found something they have been looking for a while, and that is a franchise quarterback. Since Jim Kelly retired in 1996, the Bills have tried with many different guys, but they could not find that quarterback that could lead the franchise. However, there might be a new day in Buffalo.

Quarterback Josh Allen showed a lot of things last season that should excite Bills fans. The number seven overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft showed an ability to not only use his arm, but use his feet as well. Allen rushed for 631 yards and eight touchdowns last season, and he also improved as a passer as the year went on. In his first six games, Allen threw only two touchdown passes, but in his last six games, he threw eight touchdown passes, which makes Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander very optimistic about 22-year-old’s future in Buffalo.

“He’s a playmaker,” Alexander recently told Paul Gant and the Go4it podcast.  “I think we got to see that… I did not give Josh as much credit as far as his athleticism, his ability to make plays with his legs.

“Obviously, from a quarterback standpoint, this offseason I know he’s going to focus on continuing to understand how to play quarterback at a high level, that football IQ, recognizing defenses, understanding matchups with his guys, and accuracy through working through his fundamentals and footwork, and all those little details that make you a great quarterback. And if he has that jump as I believe he will because of the character he has shown me over the course of last season, he’s definitely going to be an improved player.”

Some may argue that Allen needs to be smarter in terms of when to use his legs, but Alexander believes that is not a big issue at this point.

“He’s still young, he can take some punishment,” Alexander said. “He’s a big kid… I never want to handcuff his ability to make plays, so he has to be smart toward the end of those runs that he makes.”

Allen does need to become a better passer moving forward(10 TDs/12 interceptions last season). As for now, he seems to have the ability to be the franchise guy the Bills have wanted for years. If Allen continues to develop, the future could be very bright in Buffalo!
