Russell Wilson thinks Giants have talented roster

The New York Giants will have a new starting quarterback in 2025, and this new quarterback has been a winner over the years.

The Giants introduced 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson on Wednesday. According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it’s a one-year, $10.5 million guaranteed deal with a chance to earn $21 million.

New York also recently signed QB Jameis Winston to a one-year deal and could select a quarterback in the draft, but come opening day, Wilson, who won his only Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium with the Seahawks, expects to be the team’s starter.

“I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day,” he said. “This team is really looking for somebody to lead them in every way in terms of process and the offseason, during the season, our habits and our thought process, how we create a great winning culture, and how do we continue to establish that, to really build on things that we do well and things we need to continue to do.

“I think the big part for me is just try to — this might be my 14th year to be able to lead an amazing group of men that really have big hopes and goals and dreams and desires, and we all share the same goal.”

Last season, the 36-year-old Wilson, who threw for 2482 yards and 16 touchdowns in 11 games, helped lead the Steelers to the playoffs. In 2025, Wilson will join a team that won only three games in 2024, but he believes in head coach Brian Daboll and the talent on this roster.

“First of all, I watch the talent and the guys that make plays – that’s a huge thing. Second of all, I think Daboll is a tremendous football coach,” Wilson said. “It’s funny how people forget sometimes how great of a person or coach the person is over some tough times.

“I think the guy just won coach the year not too long ago. Sometimes I love the underdog mentality as well. I think that’s kind of been my approach every day of my life. I don’t know, maybe being 5’11” (laughs). I don’t know what it is.

“A lot of people tell you that you can’t do something. But I love challenges. I love adversity. I love all that stuff. I think the best part is just trying to bring us to the other side of winning and what that looks like.

“This is a football team that I got to play last year in a great battle—just a lot of great football players on that field. Like I said just focused on — not focused on the end goal. Focused on the process, and I’m just enjoying today, the opportunity of today and being a New York Giant.”

If the Giants do select a quarterback with the number three pick, Wilson is the perfect “bridge quarterback.” At this stage of his career, Wilson is still solid, but unless there’s a lot of talent around him, it’s hard to see him being able to win.
