Wizards’ Brogdon on playing in D.C.: ‘I felt like I’m coming back home’

On draft day, the Washington Wizards acquired veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon from the Portland Trail Blazers.

With the move, Brogdon, who attended the University of Virginia, will be playing close to where he starred in college.

On Monday at Washington Wizards Media Day at Capital One Arena, Brogdon, who averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.8 rebounds, shooting .412 from three-point range for the Trail Blazers last season, discussed his initial reaction to learning he had been traded to the Wizards.

“I was super excited,” Brogdon said. “I felt like I’m coming back home… My wife is from Northern Virginia, so this is like a full-circle moment for me being able to play for the Wizards. The team I always wanted to put the jersey on for.”

The 31-year-old Brogdon could be one of the Wizards’ veteran leaders, and the team’s three first-round picks, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, and Kyshawn George, may have to depend on Brogdon’s experience to get through the season and possibly dealing with a lot of losses.

The trio will probably do a lot of losing this season.

If things go south, which some expect to happen, the eight-year guard believes the veterans have to keep things together.

“I put it on the vets to keep us together to keep it positive,” Brogdon said. “We’re not the most talented team in the league. We have talent: we’re going to win some games. We’re also going to develop these young guys and make sure we’re building the right habits for the future.”

No one is expecting the Wizards to make much noise this season; in fact, some believe this could be one of the worst teams in basketball. However, it’s not about this season; it’s about the future, and a guy like Brogdon can help lay the groundwork for the future.
