Jets’ Saleh on WIlson: ‘If he was reluctant to play, guys, he wouldn’t be here’

On Sunday, the New York Jets lost their fifth straight game when they fell to the Falcons 13-8 at MetLife Stadium.

For the second straight game, Tim Boyle started for the Jets at quarterback but was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of veteran Trevor Siemian. Both players were ineffective, and ultimately, the Jets went another game without scoring an offensive touchdown. The Jets have not scored in an offensive touchdown in four out of their last five games.

On Monday, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he was still determining who would be the starting quarterback next Sunday when the team hosts the Houston Texans.

They could go back to Zach Wilson, but according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Wilson is apprehensive about playing again this season due to perceived injury risk.

Saleh denied that report.

“Well, let’s be clear,” Saleh said. “If he was reluctant to play, guys, he wouldn’t be here. I actually coincidentally just got done speaking with him. He came in about a half hour ago and we had a really good conversation. The young man wants the ball. He wants to start. He believes he’s the best quarterback in the room and best quarterback for this team and the guy who gives us the best chance to win and I’ll tell you guys the same thing I told him. I appreciate it. I appreciate the fact that he wants to play. I’m just not there yet.”

The Jets tried Boyle and Siemian, and they were not very good. At this point, they could go back to Wilson and let him play out the season. While he could have been better, he’s this team’s best option going forward. However, based on the play of the Jets offensive line, you could understand, if true, Wilson’s apprehension, but based on how he’s played, the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is probably not in the position to be selective. Again, that’s if the report is accurate.
