The Jaguars have placed the franchise tag on fourth-year OL Cam Robinson, the team announced on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Robinson started all 16 games at left tackle for the Jaguars in 2020. Running backs have had a lot of success with Robinson at left tackle. Last season, rookie RB James Robinson had the most scrimmage yards (1,414) and the second-most rushing yards (1,070) by an undrafted rookie in NFL history. Before that, RB Leonard Fournette gained 1,674 scrimmage yards as Fournette became the first Jaguars player to post at least 1,500 scrimmage yards in a single season since 2011.
Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is very fond of Robinson and feels the offensive line is headed in the right direction.
“We are heading in that direction,” Meyer said today. “Coach Warhop(Offensive Line Coach)feels very strong about his future and the development. We realize he has a great future; his ceiling is very high. I’ve studied him very much. I’ve spent some time with him.
“We feel that the way this free agency is moving is that the left tackle position, as always but even more now this year from hearing from the guys who have been in the NFL, this a tough year for that left tackle position. We feel like with what’s just out there and with coaching, culture, and development, Cam [Robinson] has a lot of talent.”
Robinson earned the team’s Ed Block Courage Award in 2019 after persistently recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for most of the 2018 season. He started in 15 games during his rookie campaign in 2017 and all three postseason contests. The Jaguars originally drafted the Monroe, La. native in the second round (34th overall).
A best friend to any quarterback is a good left tackle, and with Robinson, Jacksonville has that. Next season and maybe beyond, Robinson will probably be protecting Trevor Lawrence, who Jacksonville is expected to take for the number one overall pick in this year’s draft.
